This volume of pamphlets written by Henry Layton (1622-1705), author of works on among other subjects, the immortality of the soul, was once in the library of the great philosopher and physician John Locke (1632-1704) and now resides in the Angus.
In a 1702 letter, Layton thanked Locke for the 'easie reception of my book' & Locke notes that the book is the authors gift, ex dono authoris, next to his name.

An amazing story about a rare find - the beautiful Bible translated into Chinese by Baptist Missionary Joshua Marshman & the Armenian translator Johannes Lassar, who was fluent in the Chinese language. What an incredible discovery!

The rare book, which is dated 1815-1822 and translated by John Lassar and Joshua Marshman, was originally found in a pile of donations at Oxfam’s Chelmsford bookshop in Essex.

Angus Advent Calendar Day 24 takes us to Dholpur in India, where we find Father Christmas in 1928 swapping his reindeer for a magnificent elephant- which presumably couldn't fly.
Merry Christmas to all of our supporters, researchers, visitors and friends!

Angus Library Advent Calendar Day 22.
For soldiers fighting in the cold and misery of World War One, receiving a stocking at Christmas must have seemed like an impossible dream. The members of Baxter Gate Baptist Church in Loughborough however were determined to ensure that these brave men were remembered and reminded that they were loved and cherished.
Here's a list of items sent out by the church to members, which could be sent in parcels to the troops. Note the pencilled additions of flash lamps, cocoa and ci******es to the official list.

Here is a cosy scene taken from an early C19th edition of Robert Burns’ poem 'The Cottager's Saturday Night'. It contains a very pleasing and affecting description of the piety and happiness of a cottager and his family, a lovely, cosy family scene for the holidays. Can you spot their pet dog?

On the 20th day of the Angus Advent calendar, here is an array of models beautifully made out of pith. The boys are looking on proudly at their creations in this photograph from the 1920s, taken in Yakusu, DRC. There are miniature versions of steam boats, identical to those then seen on the Congo River as well as an amazing bicycle and plane. Perhaps these models would have been too precious to play with, but it would be nice to think they were.
