One of our team recently had the privilege of visiting HMP Altcourse, thanks to an invitation from Sue Campbell, Prison Parenting and Engagement Lead at Liverpool City Council.

During the visit, they met several dads who had taken part in The Nurturing Programme and Welcome to the World. Welcome to the World is an antenatal programme that supports expectant fathers as they prepare for parenthood. Pregnant partners are invited into the prison to attend sessions alongside the dads, and a midwife joins the final session to answer questions and provide guidance as families prepare for the arrival of their baby.

Listening to the fathers speak about their experiences was incredibly moving. One dad described the programme as "life-changing" and said it had given him invaluable skills and confidence for fatherhood.

The visit highlighted the importance of supporting family relationships and helping fathers build positive connections with their children, even in challenging circumstances. It was inspiring to see the commitment of both the staff and the dads involved, and the positive impact these programmes are having on families and children's futures.

We love reading the feedback that trainees provide following participation in our 4 day Parent Group Leader training, which enables practitioners to go on to deliver the 10 week Nurturing Programme for parents and carers. Here is some recent feedback

“The training was delivered both professionally and inclusively. It drew upon our strengths and sensitively addressed areas where we could adapt to our diverse communities.”

“This is the best parenting course I have ever been on and I can’t wait to deliver it.”

“The facilitators are both amazing and very inspiring to help me make positive changes in my approach in parenting groups. The activities you have provided and helping me get to know my colleagues has made me leave feeling more confident and positive about myself.”

“Thank you for a great experience. This will stay with me for life.”

If you or anyone in your network wishes to train as a Parent Group Leader in order to deliver the 10 week Nurturing Programme for groups of parents/carers, and to use the strategies and tools of the programme in one-to-one work, please get in touch. We have open training in several locations across the UK over the coming months, and we can also deliver team training at your location.

One of the joys for the team that work here at The Centre for Emotional Health is going out to visit facilitators delivering The Nurturing Programme. We recently visited the Family Relationships Team in Coventry where they are having an incredible impact delivering The Nurturing Programme for families in their area.

Michelle Wallace, Family Relationships Lead, said “In Coventry, we’ve been delivering The Nurturing Programme for many years, and what stands out most is its focus on the whole family—supporting the wellbeing of both parent and child. We value the opportunity to share this journey with each new group of parents, and it’s inspiring to hear how it shapes the way they understand and respond to their child’s behaviour. Time and again, we see the programme build parenting confidence and strengthen family relationships, with real-life impact reflected in every group we run.”

Do get in touch for more information about The Nurturing Programme and our suite of universal, evidence-based programmes for parents/carers of children from 0-19yrs.

Featured in the Spring 2026 issue of Charity Times, Mahnoor Khan reflects on her first year working at The Centre for Emotional Health.

In the article, she writes candidly about stepping into her first role in the charity sector, including moments of uncertainty and questioning whether she was out of her depth.

She also reflects on what she learned from evaluating programme impact, listening to parents’ stories, and trying to understand what the data shows (and what it can often miss).

Much of this learning, she explains, is rooted in the cultivation of good emotional health; in paying attention to feelings, responses and relationships, and how these shape everyday experiences. At The Centre for Emotional Health, these are skills we hope everyone can nurture within themselves.

Ultimately, Mahnoor’s article is a piece about learning as you go, and getting more comfortable with not always knowing.
