💷 £200,000 taken from criminals is being put back into communities

Community groups across Thames Valley are being invited to apply for grants of up to £10,000 through the latest round of the Community Fund, launched by Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber and Thames Valley Police Chief Constable Jason Hogg.

The fund supports projects that help prevent crime, improve community safety and make a real difference locally. Even better, the money comes from the sale of items seized from criminals that could not be returned to their rightful owners.

Funding is available for projects that support one of the PCC's key priorities:

🏘️ Protecting Communities - including anti-social behaviour and road safety
👪 Protecting People - including domestic abuse and the night-time economy
🏡 Protecting Property - including cybercrime, fraud and retail crime

✅ Community organisations can apply if they have not received Community Fund funding within the last 12 months.

⏰ Applications close at 12pm (noon) on Monday 28 September 2026.

📢 FINAL REMINDER: Survey closes at 12pm (noon) today

This is your final opportunity to share your views on the Government's proposal to merge police forces across England and Wales.

The Government is currently carrying out an Independent Review of Police Force Structures, having confirmed its intention to merge the current 43 police forces across England and Wales into larger regional forces as part of wider reforms.

We do not yet know what this could mean for Thames Valley Police, as it will depend on the outcome of the review.

However, if forces are reduced to 12 regional forces, Thames Valley Police could become part of a larger South East regional force.

💰 PCC supports 30 schools with phone-free funding 📵

30 secondary schools across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes will receive a share of £254,000 from Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Barber, to implement solutions to make their schools fully phone-free.

Matthew said: “Creating phone-free environments in schools is not just about academic attainment; it supports safeguarding of our young people, reduces opportunities for anti-social behaviour and helps decrease the potential for young people to become involved in, or victims of, more serious crimes including exploitation.

“We cannot eliminate the risk entirely - students will still have access to their phones outside of school hours - but limiting access during the school day will guarantee pupils a break from online pressures and exposures.

“I'm delighted to be supporting 30 local secondary schools in implementing phone-free solutions.”

The PCC launched the Phone Free Schools Fund in June with the aim of creating better learning environments for secondary school pupils.

Money for the Phone Free Schools Fund has been taken from criminals, funded by the sale of seized items that cannot be returned to their rightful owners. This money can only be used for community purposes and not for frontline policing.

Schools will be able to procure their own secure storage solution, be that lockable pouches, lockers or boxes, with the stipulation that phones cannot be accessed during the school day (unless in the event of an emergency). This means that pupils can still use their phones when travelling to and from school, supporting safe travel.

The first implementation will happen as early as the upcoming autumn term.

The Government is considering major changes to policing across England and Wales, including proposals that could see police forces merged into larger regional organisations.

If these plans go ahead, Thames Valley Police could become part of a larger South East regional force alongside Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Kent, Surrey and Suss*x.

Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Barber, has welcomed confirmation that changes will be made to the Sentencing Act that will see the killers of PC Andrew Harper excluded from the early release scheme:

“The Government’s change of direction on the Sentencing Act is a welcome move. Following a campaign backed by well over one million people across the country, I am pleased that changes will be made to the flawed Sentencing Act.

“This success is rather bittersweet however. It took the tragic case of the killing of PC Andrew Harper to put the spotlight on the Government’s plans for the early release of thousands of criminals.

“We all accept that there is a big challenge in managing our prison population, but the Sentencing Act was intended to allow the release of killers, rapists and child s*x offenders. This change in position is welcome, but I await the details when they are presented to Parliament, hopefully later this week.

“Fundamental problems with the Sentencing Act remain, especially with regards to domestic abuse perpetrators and the lack of a risk assessment in the early release programme. I will continue to work with the Government and with Thames Valley Police to try to mitigate the problems caused by this early release scheme.”

Earlier today (Sunday 30 August), the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, confirmed that anyone convicted of unlawful killing, including all forms of manslaughter, would be excluded from the early release scheme. This will include two of the men responsible for the death of PC Andrew Harper, Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers. The third, Henry Long, was not eligible for early release.

Emergency legislation to amend the Sentencing Act will be tabled to the House of Commons in the coming weeks.

Could your garden help a burglar?

🚨 Before you head out or go away this bank holiday weekend, take a look around your garden.

Items left out and unsecured could be used by burglars to gain entry to your home:

🔨 Garden tools
🪴 Heavy plant pots or stones, loose bricks and garden ornaments
🪜 Ladders and bins
🔓 Unsecured property

Patio doors and rear windows are often targeted because they are less visible from the street.

✅ Remove or secure items that could be used to smash glass
✅ Lock sheds, garages and outbuildings
✅ Store ladders away from view
✅ Ensure gates to your garden and / or fences around the perimeter are secure

Don't leave burglars the tools they need.
