Congratulations to everyone who took part in The Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat!

Well done to all the children who signed up, read books, collected rewards and joined in with library activities this summer. If you haven't quite finished yet, there's still time to complete your Challenge. Just visit your local library.

The Summer Reading Challenge website is available all year round, with activities, book recommendations and reading fun. Don't forget to try the Book Sorter, a great way for children to discover new books recommended by other children.

As St Giles' Fair arrives in Oxford once again, it struck us that the reason it's survived for so long is probably the same reason libraries have.

Neither has stayed exactly the same.
Every generation finds something different to enjoy, need or value.

The fair has changed. Libraries have changed.
But both still bring people together.

Libraries still lend books, of course. But they're also places to study, learn new skills, access digital resources, explore local history, discover culture, connect with your community, access government services, and even get your blood pressure checked.

In a world that seems to change faster every year, there's something rather reassuring about that.

Some things don't endure because they stay the same. They endure because they keep evolving.

Hundreds of years ago, the Charlbury Roman Coin Hoard was hidden away.

Today, it is taking pride of place at Oxford Westgate Library.
