Otley Roundheads -The Road To Marston Moor

Otley Roundheads -The Road To Marston Moor A Civil War Battle re-enactment by the Roundhead Association, and 17th century 'Living History' exhibition, on Saturday and Sunday, 2nd & 3rd of July 2016.

This page was set up to promote a Civil War battle re-creation in Otley on the 372nd anniversary of the Battle of Marston Moor. It commemorated the Black Bull in Otley being drunk dry by Parliamentarian troops on their way to the battle.

Some of you might remember this pub from when you were in Otley a few years back. Now it seems they're fighting the forces of Parliament rather than giving them succour! The good news is that pubs in Otley are re-opening soon, so we can all enjoy ourselves before whatever battles lie ahead. Stay safe!

Venues will be allowed to offer a takeaway menu and serve people outdoors from April 12, but customers will not be allowed inside until mid-May under Boris Johnson's roadmap.

Thanks to everyone who keeps checking in to this page. No more events planned yet, but together with Otley Pub Club [q.v!] there's always a chance we might at least revitalise the 'Cromwell's troops' walk from Fairfax Hall in Menston to The Black Bull in Otley [to drink it dry, obvs!] via The Chevin and The Royalty pub. Uniforms and ordnance not compulsory! In the meantime, to remind you of the fun that can be had in Otley, here's this year's Christmas video [and yes, I am in it!]

The 2019 Visit Otley Christmas song has dropped: Ain't We Got Fun performed by the Otley Ukulele Orchestra ...

It's nearly 3 years now since The Black Bull starred in it's own little 'pre-Marston Moor' re-creation. I added a few photos to this page a while back, just to get them all in one place, with a view to closing the page altogether. However, it prompted a load of new 'views', and although no-one in Otley has yet shown any interest in promoting another skirmish, [although everyone who came thought the last one was wonderful!] it made me wonder whether I should at least try to arrange some sort of annual 'memorial' event of the pub being drunk dry. In the meantime, here's a link that somebody just shared today on an Otley community page!

Folklore has it that Cromwell's troops drank dry the "Black Bull" pub in Otley en route to the battle of Marston Moor in 1644. (There is a blue plaque on the...
