Getting a home is a huge step. But for many people, it's just the beginning.

Without the right support, sustaining a tenancy can be incredibly hard, especially for people who've experienced trauma, poor mental health, or long periods of instability.

That's why wrap-around support matters just as much as the roof over your head. A home is more than four walls. It's security, stability, and the chance to rebuild.

Think homelessness only happens in Belfast? Myth.

Yes, Belfast has the highest rate in Northern Ireland. But Derry City and Strabane aren't far behind, and the reality is that homelessness affects every corner of this country.

The average across Northern Ireland is 4 households per 1,000 people presenting as homeless. In rural areas, that can be even harder to see and harder to get help with.

Homelessness is an everywhere issue. And it needs an everywhere response.

Did you know that First Housing provides a Harm Reduction Service that supports people who are struggling with drug and/or alcohol use?

Tina is the Harm Reduction Worker for First Housing, covering Strabane, Limavady and Dungiven areas. With over 10 years experience working in harm reduction. Tina brings a wealth of knowledge, understanding and practical support to those accessing the service.

The Harm Reduction Service provides support in a non-judgemental and person-centred way and the support is tailored to the individual. Support is available in the form of;

· Advice and information on safer injecting

· Providing links with needle exchange programs

· Overdose Prevention

· Facilitating support in areas such as housing, benefits & physical & mental health

· Providing advice and support accessing formal treatment

The service is aimed at supporting individuals to live safer and healthier lives, through minimising the risk involved in drug or alcohol use. Particularly for those who are not able or willing to consider abstinence or engage in structured treatment.

The feedback below shows the difference this type of support can make❤️

“Tina is brilliant at her job, she has encouraged me to cut down on my drinking and we talk about the dangers of mixing alcohol & drugs. Tina calls with me all the time & reminds me to go to ATU and Probation.
Tina helped me get moved into my new flat, helping me get set up and get discretionary support. In times of need Tina has helped me get food parcels from The Salvation Army and get items for my home from St Vincent DePaul”.

“My harm reduction worker visits me and gives me moral support. She encouraged and supported me to link in with ATU and my community centre. She has supported me to seek medical support and to attend my G.P.
She is very caring, good listener and I would highly recommend the service to anyone who is in need”

Harm Reduction referrals are made through NIHE/ other social housing providers, statutory and voluntary agencies, family members and self referrals and this should be done through our First Housing Floating Support Service. Referral form can be found: www.first-housing.com or phone Tina on; 07736486296

Excellent interviews with Tommy & Gaz. Non statutory & statutory addictions services remain at the bottom of the food chain in terms of funding and so many lifes have been lost. Despite all the excellent work by us all whether statutory or non statutory to break down the societal stigma attached to addiction it is evident that it still a very real issue faced by families impacted by addiction and indeed services who support them.
