Malcolm in Northfield Rd has been surveying the moths and butterflies of Hogs Wood for a long time. Earlier this week he posted this:
Very rare butterfly spotted at Hogs Wood Okehampton. Large Tortoiseshell butterfly, declared extinot in the 1960s, 70s. In recent years has started to colonise the southern England. This year Butterfly conservation declared it resident again as it was recorded from Cornwall to Kent'.

Its brilliant Hogs Wood is a place which supports this butterfly - more info here.

Friends of Hog's Wood, we need your help!

We have been made aware of a process whereby land can be nominated to the local council for consideration as an Asset of Community Value. This means that if the land were to be leased or sold, the group then has the right to bid for the asset.

To be placed on the register of Assets of Community Value at West Devon Borough Council (WDBC), it needs to be considered to: further the social wellbeing or social interests of the local community

There need to be nominations from 21 people who live locally and are happy to be considered as part of the Hogs Wood Group. There is no legal liability from being a signatory. If you would like to put your name forward to be a signatory please complete this form or click the button below and we’ll be in touch.

Please add your details below if you're willing to become a member fo Hog's Wood (Wonnacott's Meadow) in order to facilitate nominating it as an Asset of Community Value. 🌳Community Nature Watch 🐦

Fiona has been catching birdsong in Hogs Wood since living nearby.
'I've heard a greater diversity of birds in Hogs Wood than other local spaces I go. What's so unusual about Hogs Wood is the type of bird - like the Willow Warbler. They're not heard everywhere and designated wildlife sites will note them on their website if they're heard. It's also the density of birds and number of species in a very short time. This is all exceptional compared with other similar habitats in this area. We're so lucky to have this on our doorstep'.

Fiona uses the Merlin app to help identify the birdsong which included these on a visit in April:🐦‍⬛
House Sparrow, Great Tit, Blackbird, Goldcrest, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Starling, Song Thrush, Collared Dove, Black Cap, Dunnock, Willow Warbler, Chiff Chaff and Carrion Crow. 🪺
