Gain free entry to the birthplace of one England’s greatest authors with Heritage Open Days

04/09/2026 - This September, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13, the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum will be welcoming visitors for free as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days.

The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum is where the literary legend was born on 11 September 1885. Only 30 minutes from Nottingham city centre, the museum is a must see for fans of literature, and for those wanting to delve deeper into Nottingham’s literary heritage.Museum staff in Victorian dress tipping his hat at reception.

Step back in time to experience the traditional Victorian wash house, see the parlour; a room only for special guests, and have a wander around the parental and other bedrooms. The museum’s permanent exhibition features items from Lawrence’s family and even paintings created by the author himself.

Museum staff and volunteers will be on hand throughout the day, in traditional Victorian dress, showing live demonstrations in the wash house and to provide extra depth and knowledge to visitor’s understanding of Lawrence and Victorian life in Eastwood.
Curator of the museum’s current exhibition, ‘The Optimist’s Incomplete’ Su’ur Su’eddie Vershima Agema will be performing poetry readings throughout the day too.

Portfolio Holder for Health and Leisure, Councillor Teresa Cullen, said, “For those that haven’t yet managed to visit the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum, this is a fantastic opportunity to come and see what it’s all about, and take a deep dive into our local culture”
“The museum staff and volunteers do such an incredible job curating and maintaining the museum. They’re always on hand to answer any questions visitors have with their wealth of Lawrence and local knowledge and this is a big part of why the museum is loved by people near and far. It really is such a gem that I feel all Broxtowe residents should come and visit!”

Museum and Collections Officer, Carolyn Melbourne, said, “Heritage Open Days are a great opportunity for people to visit the museum for free, and while it is a national initiative, what it seems to achieve best is getting people to explore what is on their own doorstep. We often take for granted what is in our own locality; Heritage Open Days give us the chance to remedy that.”
The museum will be welcoming visitors for free from 10:00am – 4:00pm on both Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September.

Important Notice to All Allotment Holders

Following the alert issued this evening by the UK Government, Eastwood Town Council has decided to suspend all fires on the allotments with immediate effect, until further notice.
Please ensure that no fires are lit or maintained on the allotment site during this period.
We would be grateful if you could pass this message on to other allotment holders who may not receive emails, so that everyone is aware of the current restriction.

Bin collections will start earlier from Tuesday 11 August to Friday 14 August due to the incoming Amber heat-health warning.

The team will start at 5:30am during this week to avoid working during the hottest part of the day. Please ensure your bin is ready to be collected before this time.

We will continue to provide updates as and when early collections occur.

Eastwood Town Council are pleased to present to David Boam from The Dog and Parrot Real Ale House, the Hazel Braithwaite award in recognition of the fundraising efforts by the pub for the Eastwood Community. So far the pub has raised over £110,000 for good causes in and around Eastwood.

David and his wife Kathryn Boam (Eastwood’s current Deputy Mayor) were also presented with a Rose grown by Brian Fretwell on behalf of Chapter and Verse as a thank you for their fundraising efforts.
