It was great to be joined in Old Catton today by Alice Macdonald MP and Beth Jones for Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner

The Conservatives and Reform have overlooked Old Catton for too long, ignoring the basics that could make significant improvement to our lovely community here.

But on July 16th we can change that, we can show the Conservatives and Reform that we demand better.

My work on Sprowston town council has shown me that when we get the basics right, such as installing cost-cutting LED streetlamps and investing in grass verge cutters, we can greatly improve our communities. If I am elected, that is what I will focus on providing.

Tonight, at their first full council meeting in charge, Norwich Greens are bringing forward proposals to increase councillor pay.

We believe it’s wrong to give pay rises to councillors - including a 26% increase for their Leader, 63% for Deputy Leader and 35% for cabinet members - which are completely out of step with what staff are being offered.

This also comes at a time when the council is on a path to being abolished, meaning cabinet responsibilities are being diminished rather than increased.

We agree that councillor pay needs to be set at a rate which doesn’t prevent anyone from putting themselves forward to serve their community. But the scale, timing and context of these increases is not appropriate.

Labour councillors will not support these proposals.

We’ve been out and about supporting Beth Jones, our Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner candidate, and Jake Norman, our candidate in the upcoming Old Catton by-election 💪🌹

𝗕𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 is a local city councillor, who has served as Norwich City Council’s cabinet member for housing and community safety. She is also a mental health nurse working in crisis services across the county.

𝗝𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 has lived in Old Catton all his life, and serves on Sprowston Town Council. If elected, he will be the youngest serving Norfolk County Councillor!
