🌍 Norwich Young Greens & UEA Young Green Society at the city's rally today calling for local and international action on climate change NOW!

πŸ™Œ Great turnout with some people attending a protest for the very first time and showing all the climate activism already going on - but we gave a clear message that more is needed from govt & public to protect the planet's future πŸ’š

🌏 Norfolk Countdown to COP26

🌿 During the days in the run up to the COP26 Climate Change conference our Green Councillors will be sharing with us the changes they believe need to be made in Norwich and Norfolk.

🏑 Seven days to and the need for retrofitting of our existing housing stock is one of the central pillars for achieving net zero.

🏒 80% of the houses that we will live in by 2050 already exist.

🏘 Councillor Jamie Osborn is calling on the government to bring in stricter regulations for all housing to achieve this. Energy efficiency, heating and lighting need to be considered together for a whole-house retrofit.

πŸ‘·β€β™€οΈ Retrofitting creates jobs and helps keep vulnerable people warm.

🌳 Eight days until and Councillor Denise Carlo is campaigning to protect mature trees and add to the number of street trees in Norwich. COP26 needs to consider the part trees play in cooling our towns and cities, cleaning the air and supporting biodiversity.

🌲 Norwich City Council and Norfolk County Council must ensure new trees are planted and old ones are not lost unnecessarily.

🌏 Norfolk Countdown to

🌿 During the days in the run up to the COP26 Climate Change conference our Green Councillors will be sharing with us the changes they believe need to be made in Norwich and Norfolk.

🌍 Ten days till COP26 and air quality is an issue in the Norwich area.
πŸš™πŸššπŸš—πŸ’¨

🌿 Greenparty Norwich City Councillor Nannette Youssef is concerned that poor air quality along primary routes in Norwich has not been picked up by the Annual Air Quality Status Reports, which suggests that air quality monitoring is inadequate ⚠️

🏭 Nannette says the UK’s track record on air pollution is dangerously poor. In 2021, an EU court found that the UK had broken air pollution limits for the past decade, a failure which is directly impacting the health and well-being of the UK population.

πŸ˜” Air pollution can have tragic consequences for those exposed to it. Over 40,000 deaths each year can be attributed to air pollution, and in 2020, air pollution was ruled the cause of nine-year-old Ella Adoo Kissi Debrah’s death. Ella died of an asthma attack at her home in Lewisham, where she was exposed to excessive levels of pollution.

πŸ’¨ Air pollution in the UK is not evenly distributed, with some demographics being disproportionately burdened with high levels of air pollution. Deprived areas and areas with a high Black, Asian and minority ethnic population unjustly suffer from much higher rates of air pollution than others.

🌿Green Norfolk County Councillor Paul Neale says it’s unbelievable that 180,000 tonnes of Norfolk’s waste is sent to Bedfordshire annually & incinerated.

πŸ”₯ We shouldn’t support incineration.

♻️ Recycling is important, but we need to use far fewer natural resources.
