Grozone Community Garden

Grozone Community Garden Grozone is a community garden, horticulture and wildlife project based at the former Dane Nurseries

Grozone is a flourishing community garden, horticulture and wildlife project in the middle of Northwich, Cheshire

We provide volunteering opportunities for all and social and horticultural therapy for people with mild to moderate depression and anxiety. This 'hidden oasis' is a fantastic place for mind and body, where you can learn new skills or share and develop existing ones in a welcoming and

sociable outdoor environment. The garden is open to everybody Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays 10am - 3pm. Come down, meet the team and take a look around the working garden.

Coping with the hot weather only brings out the creativity of the Grozone team: Tony and Matthew have been trialling a prototype cooling foot bath, while we have also resurrected our 'Desert Fridge' to keep our milk cold. It's totally off-grid and simply uses some big pots, some wet sand and the latent heat of evaporation (We only know this thanks Rob, who seems to be the only one of us who paid attention during physics lessons at school)

Despite a shorter that usual week for us, we have still got plenty done in the garden including harvesting some leeks, onions, purple sprouting broccoli, garlic and our first carrots of the year. Delicious!

During our Tuesday Nature Connection session, we looked at Elder (Sambucus nigra): we talked about its properties and the folklore around the plant; we talked about its edible uses; we tasted elderflower cordial; and we made elder beads which we decorated. It is such a common plant which is often taken for granted. I think we all appreciate it a little more now.

Earlier in the year we were gifted some seeds from Fothergills UK and Groundwork.

Our volunteers got to work planting the seeds and we are starting to see the rewards with flowers and vegetables making great progress and brightening and greening up our beds. Thank you to Fothergills UK and Groundwork.

It has been so hot at Grozone this week, we have had a family of giraffes move in! Welcome to Goofy and the gang. They look like they have been here forever.

Despite being hotter than the sun at times, we have got plenty done this week.

During our Tuesday Mindful Contact with Nature session, we focused on nettles. We talked about their benefits to nature (they are known to support at least 40 different insect species including Peacock and Red admiral butterflies). We had a go at making cordage and we tasted some nettle tea.

We have also done lots of weeding, veg planting, path maintenance, wood processing, dead hedging and general tasks around the site.

We are looking forward to slightly lower temperatures next week so we can get back to drinking oodles of tea!

Today is hive of activity of activity at Grozone despite having three seasons in a day!

We have decorated the covers of our Nature Journals during our The Mersey Forest Mindful Contact with Nature session, weeded our raised beds and transplanted lettuce into them, weeded our ornamental beds, continued to make willow screening, done repairs around the site and processed a lot of wood.

One job we definitely donโ€™t need to do today is watering!

We are very happy that Nature Makers - Cheshire Mid & Chester will be returning to Grozone to offer more of their wonderful nature well-being sessions.

We had amazing feedback from the previous sessions and thanks to lottery funding, these sessions can continue to be offered free of charge.

Great news!

Nature Boost Cheshire CIC has received National Lottery Awards for All funding to continue Roots of Connection, our creative nature wellbeing project at Grozone in Northwich.

This support means we can keep offering free, welcoming nature based sessions for adults who want to build confidence, feel less isolated, get creative and enjoy gentle time outdoors.

Weโ€™re excited to continue this much loved project and the wonderful community that has grown around it.

Made possible thanks to players.

We are having another productive day at Grozone: we have processed firewood; made willow hurdles; weeded our large fruit cage; continued work on a giant bug hotel; tidied the area around our outdoor kitchen and planted more herbs there; and weeded one of our raised beds which we have planted up with beetroot and mangelwurzel.

Grozone staff were recently invited to give a talk on 'Gardening in a Changing Climate' and in preparing for the talk we became aware of an initiative called the 'People's Emergency Briefing' on Climate Change. As part of this process, a film about the climate crisis and what needs to be done to properly address it has been produced. This is being made available for viewing at community showings all around the UK.

Our friends at Sustainable Northwich and Winsford Sustainability Partnership have arranged a showing on Friday 15th May at Winsford Academy from 7pm, with an open discussion at the end of the film.

Please try and get along. Public debate around the Climate Crisis has slipped down the agenda in recent months and this is an opportunity for us all to get back on track with a better understanding of exactly what's at stake, what action needs to be taken, and who we need to influence to make those actions happen.

Here are the details of the event on 15th May:
