🎙 POLICE PENSION WEBINAR FOR FED MEMBERS

Police Federation members can find out more about their pension benefits and the choices available to them at an online seminar later this month.

The Police Pensions: Know Your Numbers webinar, held by the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW), will take place on Thursday 24 September from 4pm to 5.30pm.

With police pensions spanning different schemes, benefit calculations and retirement options, the session is designed to give members a clearer understanding of what their pension could mean for them.

The webinar will look at how benefits are calculated across the various police pension schemes and the different commutation options available to members.

It will also cover how to use the NPCC pension calculator as well as official pension forecasts and the timelines for making pension choices.

MORE THAN £1m RAISED FOR FAMILIES OF CLEVELAND OFFICERS

More than £1 million has been raised for the families of two Cleveland Police officers killed in a road collision, following an extraordinary public response to a fundraiser launched in their memory.

PC Matt Blades (pictured left), 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, died in the early hours of Saturday 22 August after a crash on the A66 in South Bank, near Middlesbrough.

The GoFundMe appeal, launched by Cleveland Police Federation to support the families of the two officers, has attracted thousands of donations in the days since their deaths.

The fundraiser has received support from Northamptonshire Police Federation chair Sam Dobbs, who praised the public response and the commitment for proceeds to be split equally between the two families.

Sam said: “Firstly, I want to send condolences on behalf of the branch to PC Blades’ and PC Clough’s families and friends, as well as our colleagues at Cleveland Police Federation and anyone else impacted by this awful news.

“Losing one of your own to an on-duty death is something we can truly empathise with. No matter if it’s been seen before in policing, it is always very painful, and you are left struggling to accept they lost their life simply trying to protect the public, like all do in this profession.

“But alongside the immense sadness, the response to this fundraiser has been incredibly powerful. To see more than £1 million raised by members of the public in such a short space of time is a remarkable demonstration of the respect and affection people have for Matt and Tom, and for their families."

SPECIAL HELPS SAVE MAN'S LIFE ON FIRST EVER SHIFT

When Special Constable Sophie Hyde set out on her first-ever shift as a volunteer with Northamptonshire Police, she never imagined the evening that lay ahead.

Fellow Special Constable Lorna Montecalvo, an experienced volunteer, was asked to oversee Sophie’s debut on the frontline.

The aim was to keep the shift light and focused on low-end jobs, with a third Special, Pete Isom, also in tow to prevent certain operations from effectively being single-crewed.

“This is policing, so you can never say dealing with something serious is the last thing you expect to do, but in the circumstances, I thought there was a fair chance the evening would play out as intended,” Lorna said.

“And for a while, it did – but it certainly didn’t end that way."

MEMBERS EARN PRAISE FOR SAVING TRAPPED MAN'S LIFE AMIDST 'FIREBALL'

When Northamptonshire PC Tanya Watkins arrived at a multiple-lorry crash on the M1, she was expecting the ‘worse day of her life’.

Several HGVs had collided into a ‘fireball’ when she responded to a call with fellow PCs Charlie Brown and Tom Cottle.

The Federation members' efforts over the next frantic few minutes not only saved the life of a man who was trapped amidst the flamed-ridden wreckage but earned praise from all corners of the Force.

The incident took place late at night on the northbound carriageway on Tuesday 4 August and led to a much-publicised closure of the M1 Motorway between junctions 16 and 18 for 26 hours.

The crash involved four HGVs while the driver of a white Scania vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tanya said: “We were told there would be a ‘fireball’ when we arrived at the incident and saw a lorry on fire blocking three lanes of traffic.

“When Tom arrived a minute after Charlie and I, we knew we needed some fire extinguishers in a hurry.

“We could hear that one of the men trapped was still talking in a lorry that was heavily on fire. As we tried to put it out, I remember thinking that this was going to be the worse day of my life not being able to help a man who was trapped inside a burning vehicle.

“When we had emptied our own extinguishers, I ran back up the motorway banging on doors to see if I could get my hands on any more and luckily, we got enough to ensure that Tom and I could eventually put the fire out.

“People have told us that we did a great job and it was a great team effort. It is just sad that there was still a fatality from the incident.”

Chief inspector and Head of Roads Policing in the Force Tim Britton (pictured) said he was ‘in awe’ of the work that the likes of Tanya, Tom, Charlie and their colleagues do on a daily basis.

“Before they even arrived at that scene on that night, they would have to get through four lanes of traffic on a busy motorway with no hard shoulder,” said Tim, who is also deputy secretary and deputy treasurer of the Federation.

“In the dark, they will have been faced with a scene of destruction and quickly had to work out how many vehicles are involved and where the casualties are. The scene would have been complete chaos and the fireball would have made immediate decision-making even harder.

“As their chief inspector, I am immensely proud of what they did on that night.”

Branch chair Sam Dobbs reserved further praise for the Federation members.

“Our members put themselves in danger to try and save others. They all showed incredible selflessness and bravery to save the life of the person who was trapped."

✍ MEMBERS URGED TO CONTACT MP TO MAINTAIN MOMENTUM

Northamptonshire Police Federation members are being urged to contact their MP to support the campaign to block the early release of two men convicted over the death of PC Andrew Harper.

PC Harper was killed in August 2019 after being dragged behind a car while attempting to stop a group stealing a quad bike in Berkshire.

Two men were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 13 years in prison.

However, the pair could be set for an early release under Government plans to ease pressure on the prison system.

A petition calling for them to remain in prison for their full sentences has passed one million signatures.

Now branch chair Sam Dobbs is calling on Federation members to contact their MP to ensure the issue is on the political agenda when Parliament returns on 1 September.

Sam said: “For the petition to receive more than a million signatures is extraordinary and should send a very clear message to the Government about the strength of feeling around the country.

“However, the campaign won’t end there.

“We’re asking our members and the wider public to take a few minutes to contact their MP, if they haven’t already done so.

“We want to make them fully aware just how strongly police officers, their families, and the public feel about the potential early release of two people convicted over the death of a police officer when Parliament returns next month.”

✍ ANDREW HARPER PETITION NEARS ONE MILLION SIGNATURES

A petition calling for those responsible for the death of PC Andrew Harper to remain in prison is approaching one million signatures.

And Northamptonshire branch chair Sam Dobbs says the figures highlight the strength of feeling across the length and breadth of the country.

Sam is now urging all members to add their signature, if they have not already done so, to maintain pressure on the Government to overturn its current position.

“As it stands at the minute, prisoners found guilty of manslaughter are due to benefit from the Government’s early release scheme,” said Sam. “Manslaughter is not just a nebulous concept, it’s not just a category of prisoner, it is given to people who are responsible for the unlawful killing of a human being without the malice or intent required for a murder conviction.

“Those in prison with manslaughter convictions are responsible for the death of another person and in this case, a police colleague doing his job.

“As police officers, we are responsible for the protection of life and I think that is why the potential early release of the prisoners who were found guilty of manslaughtering PC Andrew Harper has so fundamentally offended the whole of policing.”

🌹 NORTHANTS PC REMEMBERED AT EMOTIONAL SERVICE

Police Constable Faizaan Najeeb was remembered alongside fellow fallen officers at a moving Service of Remembrance attended by hundreds of police officers, families and colleagues.

The annual Care of Police Survivors (COPS) service took place at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire on Sunday (9 August), providing an opportunity for the policing family to come together to honour those who have died in the line of duty.

Attended by loved ones of fallen colleagues, the service also raises money for COPS - a charity that supports the families of police officers and staff who have lost their lives on duty. Chief Constable Ivan Balhatchet was also in attendance.

The service marked the culmination of this year’s Police Unity Tour (PUT), a three-day cycling challenge that raises money for COPS and sees riders from forces across England and Wales cycle hundreds of miles in memory of fallen officers.

For Northamptonshire’s Police Unity Tour riders, the occasion carried particular significance.

Among them was Sergeant Lorna Clarke, who described the experience as both a personal challenge and a powerful opportunity to come together for a shared cause.

“I took it on initially as a personal challenge to help square away some things that I was dealing with,” said Lorna.

“And then to see such a friendly bunch of people come together and deliver miles and miles of cycling between us – we’ve done just short of 200 miles to get here – and a lot of people aren’t cyclists.

“To be able to work together for one common cause is an amazing thing to be part of.”
