In 2021, one person waited more than 12 hours in a chair in a designated ‘Fit to Sit’ area at Northamptonshire’s hospitals. In 2025, 236 did — five of them for more than 24 hours. The longest single wait went from 12 hours to 32.

Those figures come from the hospitals themselves, released under a Liberal Democrat Freedom of Information request. Ministers have voted down a Liberal Democrat amendment that would have put a duty on the Health Secretary to end corridor care within a year.

Nobody who works in that department wants people sitting in chairs overnight. What is missing is beds — and the social care that frees them up.

Applications to the housing register in North Northamptonshire have risen 129% in three years — an average of 560 new applications every month, on figures published in October 2025.

That is not a queue to be managed. It is a shortage of homes, and the only answer to a shortage is to build.

On 10 September the Liberal Democrats introduced a Bill to set a legal target of 150,000 new social homes a year, give councils control over Right to Buy and the receipts from it, and open a rent-to-equity route so tenants can build a stake through the rent they already pay.

We will keep making the case for building the homes North Northamptonshire needs — and for a Government that is held to the number.

887 burglaries were reported across North Northamptonshire in the ten months to March. In 76% of them, police never identified a suspect at all.

Where you live changes the odds. In our four towns, 1 in 13 burglaries ends with someone charged. Outside them — the villages, the lanes, the farms — it is 1 in 36.

Officers attend every burglary here, and have since 2019. It is what happens after the visit that is failing. In June, inspectors graded Northamptonshire Police inadequate at investigating crime and issued a formal cause of concern.

That has to improve. It also has to be paid for. You cannot close police stations, cut detectives and let court backlogs build for a decade and then act surprised.

Britain’s farms are on course for the smallest arable harvest on record. Analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit puts the hit to farm incomes at around £550 million against March forecasts.

The Government’s answer, announced in August, is up to £15 million to help farmers build on-farm reservoirs — a fund with no opening date confirmed, covering arable and horticulture only, not livestock or mixed farms.

By the middle of August, every county in England — this one included — was formally in drought or prolonged dry weather. Water falls here in winter and is long gone by July. Farms are one of the few places with the land to hold it, and outdated planning rules are part of what stops them.

The Liberal Democrats are calling for a national "call to store" programme: find the capacity, clear the planning barriers, and fund it at a scale that matches what farmers have actually lost.

Between 2018 and June 2026, 205,000 people arrived in Britain by small boat. About 9,700 were returned — five in every hundred.

That is what going it alone has produced. A country that cannot return people does not have a working asylum system, and no amount of tough talk changes the arithmetic.

The Liberal Democrats want Britain to negotiate its way into the European returns system — the one Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein are already inside without being EU members. It gives you a legal route to return someone to the country they first entered, and access to the shared database showing who has already been refused elsewhere.

Fair to people genuinely fleeing persecution. Fair to taxpayers. That is a system. What we have now is not.

The Care Quality Commission rates 65% of maternity services in England as inadequate or requires improvement on safety. Kettering General's maternity service is one of them — and it was rated good as recently as 2019.

This week Ministers voted down a Liberal Democrat amendment that would have required every maternity unit to reach good or outstanding, backed by one-to-one midwifery care and a consultant obstetrician on every labour ward around the clock.

None of that is something a midwife can fix on her own. The CQC rates the trust good for caring — the one domain where it is not asking for improvement. What is missing is the staffing, the funding and the buildings, and those are Ministers' to sort out.

So here is where the Liberal Democrats stand, plainly.

Join the single market through the EEA. Negotiate a new customs union with the EU. Build a proper defence partnership. And treat all of it as what our party says it is — an essential step on the road to EU membership, which remains our longer-term objective.

When the European Partnership Bill comes before Parliament, Liberal Democrat MPs will table amendments to make the Government negotiate exactly that.

From Corby to Rushden, this is a place that makes things and moves things. Few places in England have more to gain from tearing down trade barriers.

And we are not out on a limb. YouGov in June found 55% of the public now support rejoining the EU, against 34% opposed — and 59% back a closer relationship even short of full membership, including 54% of people who voted Leave in 2016. The country has moved. The red lines haven’t.

Brexit trade barriers added £250 to the average household food bill between December 2019 and March 2023 — about a third of all food price inflation over that period.

That is research from the Centre for Economic Performance at the LSE, not a leaflet claim. Paperwork at the border does not stay at the border. It ends up on the shelf.

The Government’s food deal with the EU is welcome and long overdue. But it is not due to take effect until 2027, and it covers food. It leaves every other border cost exactly where it is.

Wages here buy less than they should, and part of the reason is sitting in the trolley.

Joining the single market takes the barriers down across the board. It is also the biggest step back towards EU membership, which is where the Liberal Democrats want Britain to be.
