Cadets from 119 Scunthorpe Sqn and 152 City Of Hull Squadron visited 644 Volunteer Gliding Squadron this weekend for a day of gliding.

We didn’t let a drizzly morning dampen our spirits—instead, we took the chance to go 'under the hood' with an in-depth hangar tour to learn more about how these aircraft work.
As soon as the clouds cleared after lunch, it was a quick scramble to the airfield. Thanks to a super smooth operation by the 644 staff, every single cadet from both squadrons got airborne—we even managed to catch some afternoon sun!

On behalf of everyone who attended, thank you to the 644 VGS team for the incredible effort you put into making this such a rewarding experience.

We've got 2026 off to a flying start; with 12 cadets from 1224 (Wharfedale) Squadron, 1324 - Hawker Blackburn Squadron ATC and 1869 Middlesbrough Squadron RAFAC flying from RAF Leeming today!

Looking forward to flying many more cadets this year from across the wing.

Do you know who's behind all our aviation opportunities? The Wing Aviation Team pictured here (not the ones in the jets)!

Led by Sqn Ldr Waudby; the trio manage all our aviation opportunities - whether that be flying, gliding or scholarships.

Pictured from left to right is CI Russ Tandy, Sqn Ldr Adam Waudby and CI Rich Gerrard. Recently Rich and Russ have been running the show whilst Adam takes a break (and explores the world).

Whilst Sqn Ldr Waudby was away down under; we managed to arrange some exchange video calls between our cadets and the cadets of 3 Wing, Australian Air Force Cadets who were on camp! (As it was a tri service camp; we also managed to catch up with a couple of Australian Army Cadets and Australian Naval Cadets too!)

15 lucky cadets from 119 Scunthorpe Sqn ATC and 1324 - Hawker Blackburn Squadron ATC got to chat to their Australian peers; hot topics were spiders, snakes, their blue camouflage (General Purpose Uniform) and whether it's any good in the field - and naturally their hats!

One of the British cadets taking part was CWO Gerrard, who said “Meeting cadets from Australia was a fantastic surprise. Learning about their different uniforms and discussing the differences were cool; and we got to share notes on band which was great.”

Despite a challenging time different (10 hours) we managed to make this work twice; with the Australian cadets calling in before breakfast; and the British cadets calling in towards the end of their parade night, the day before. It's just like having a TARDIS...

Did you think it was quiet around here? Our Wing Aviation Officer, Sqn Ldr Adam Waudby has been taking a well earned break; and whilst on personal holiday down under to Australia ended up on camp with the Australian Air Force Cadets, supporting 344 Musicians Flight and 3 Wing!

Based at RAAF Richmond, near Sydney, for the week - he spent the week teaching and performing music with the 115 cadets and staff from around New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory; learning about the Australian Air Force Cadets and teaching them about what we do in the United Kingdom. This year saw their tenth anniversary concert, Echoes of a Decade; and also saw 325 (Goulburn) Squadron celebrating their Freedom of the City of Goulburn - with Adam performing in the band at both events to support.

All this came about because before taking post as the Wing Aviation Officer; Adam had a very successful 9 years as our Wing Music Officer - taking the Wing all over the country performing; making some friends (especially FLTLT(AAFC) Ben Simon - the OC of 344 Musician’s Flight; effectively the 3 Wing Band) in Australia along the way; hence the opportunity to work together. During COVID the Wing had a joint virtual performance with them; so being able to go over personally was the culmination of a long term plan!

Speaking about the experience, Adam commented: “It was fantastic to finally get to meet Ben and the team in person; and to be able to once again enjoy making music. I’ve always felt that music unites and is a common language; and to be able to go to the other side of the world and immediately fit into Ben’s team and teach and play was incredible. It was brilliant to be able to see my flag (the white rose of Yorkshire, naturally) hanging in the band room all week - alongside the Australian Southern Cross."

By the end of the week it was common place for the attending cadets and staff to greet Adam with “Ey up” getting a response of “G’day” and much learning and laughter occurred. (Every day they surprised him with a different Australian staple food - he just about managed to hold the Vegemite down…)

Massive thanks to the Australian Air Force Cadets for having him; and making him so welcome. We’re absolutely not considering sending him again next year…

642 Aerospace Ground School, based at RAF Leeming, ran their first 1 day Bronze Wings course today for Central & East Yorkshire Wing cadets. From classroom lessons, outside practical activities and hands on simulator flying the cadets learnt lots and put it into practice to be ready for assessment late afternoon. The cadets had a great day learning and all managed to a pass the course.

Sixteen cadets from eight different Squadrons of the Wing were today awarded their Bronze Wings following the last of the two-day Courses at 642 AGS, RAF Leeming.

The Course was intense, demanding and enjoyable, and many valuable aviation-related lessons were learned.

The two-day course will now be superseded by a one-day course, which should enable a greater number of cadets to earn their Bronze Wings in the future.

Really proud to recently visit my Deputy, CI Rich Gerrard to award him a Commandant's Certificate of Meritorious Service on behalf of Commandant Air Cadets

Rich constantly gives above and beyond support to the young air cadets in our region - both in his role as Deputy Aviation Officer; and also as a committed member of staff at squadron level.

The volunteer role is a busy and therefore tough one alongside a demanding civilian job; but he always makes time - through his efforts we expect to fly around 600 cadets this year. He also spends time planning and carrying out the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme; building resilience in our young adults (and even persuading me to come and help!)

Massive congratulations to Rich for his very well deserved award!

We are really pleased to announce that four outstanding members of staff have been awarded Wing Commander's Commendations following their sterling efforts to get 44 cadets a brilliant experience getting to fly in the mighty Chinook earlier this year; at very short notice!

Massive congratulations to Civilian Instructors Julia Carey, Peter Knight, Rich Gerrard and Russ Tandy - who were recently awarded these at their squadrons, by the Wing Aviation Officer Sqn Ldr Waudby, and Commandant Air Cadets who kindly stood in for him at City of York squadron!

All four are thoroughly deserving - supporting the short notice venture to the best of their ability; and putting the greater good before their individual squadrons to make it the success it was.

Massive thanks to Julia, Peter, Rich and Russ for what they do helping cadets at their own squadrons and beyond get the most out of the opportunities available in the Royal Air Force Air Cadets.
