North Tawton crews supported colleagues at a fire in a derelict two-storey building on Wednesday 3rd September. The blaze had spread to the roof and first floor, but was safely brought under control by mid-afternoon.

Ricky and Craig from our team wore BA sets to continue dampening down the hotspots throughout the incident ground. Tor was part of the firefighter decontamination process, an invaluable task that keeps our crews safe from the harmful contaminants found in smoke filled environments.

No injuries were reported and the property was thankfully unoccupied. Cause believed to be accidental.

Thank you to all crews for their hard work and teamwork on this incident.

🚒 We are always looking for new team members to join us as Paid firefighters - having more team members at North Tawton means that we will have more availability and more likely to be able to attend incidents in and around our local area.

If you’d like to make a huge difference and help keep your community safe by becoming an On-call firefighter simply send us a message or pop down to see us on a Monday evening drill night (1900-2100)! 🚒

In the early hours of this morning, the North Tawton crew were mobilised as a relief crew to a fire in the open at Torrington Common.

The incident began around 11pm the night before, with initial crews working hard throughout the night to bring the fire under control. Initially our role was to provide command support before being deployed to dampen down hotspots and prevent the risk of the fire reigniting or spreading further.

We utilised 3 x 45mm lay flat hoses, along with thermal imaging cameras and torches, to carefully check and cool affected areas. We remained in attendance until being relieved ourselves at 06:30am.

A big thank you to the crews who worked tirelessly overnight and to those who provided relief to ensure the incident was fully resolved.

🔥 Please remember to take extra care when out in the countryside—especially during dry spells—as even a small spark can quickly spread.

Yesterday, North Tawton Fire Station was called out as part of a 4-pump shout to a fire in fields on a farm near Tottiford Reservoir. Initially, Crews from Chagford, Bovey Tracey, Moretonhampstead, and North Tawton worked together to bring the incident under control.

Firefighters used hose reels, layflat hose, beaters, and 4x4s to access and tackle the fire across multiple sectors. To maintain a steady supply of water, crews also utilised Tottiford Reservoir, using a Light Portable Pump (LPP) to keep each sector supplied.

Fantastic teamwork from all attending crews ensured the situation was dealt with swiftly and safely.

Once we were finished cleaning up and making sure our appliances were ready to be deployed again, the landowner was kind enough to let the crew meet some of the Alpacas that we had been able to get to safety as the fires were spreading to their paddock!

We’re recruiting! If you live or work within 5 minutes of North Tawton Fire Station and want to be part of a professional, dedicated, and supportive team, get in touch today to find out more about becoming an On-Call Firefighter.

Community Support in Action – Thank You, Arla Foods! 🧑‍🚒

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Arla Foods in North Tawton for their incredible support over the last 20+ years in helping keep our community safe.

Arla has been releasing its employees during the working day so they can respond to emergency incidents as On-Call Firefighters at North Tawton Fire Station. At the moment, we have three Arla employees actively responding, with more in the recruitment process – a vital lifeline for our station.

Yesterday, Group Commander Ben Williams visited Arla Foods to present their Employer Recognition Certificate and just moments before the presentation, CM Ashley Arscott and FF Craig Wilson were called out to tackle a fire in the open (pictured)! Thankfully FF Ricky Woolridge was able to step in to help complete the award handover.

With plans for Arla’s site expansion, we’re excited about the future and the possibility of welcoming even more local people into our firefighting team here at North Tawton!

Thank you, Arla Foods, for standing alongside us and the community we serve!

Yesterday Evening, crews from North Tawton, Hatherleigh, and Danes Castle tackled a large vehicle fire involving a combine harvester in a field near Eggesford. The fire spread to around 10 metres of hedgerow before being brought under control with various firefighting tools including breathing apparatus, jets, CAFS foam, and a fogspike.

Sadly, the harvester was severely damaged and and cause confirmed as accidental.

We have been experiencing a high number of calls following the heavy rain in Devon and Somerset earlier today, with more rain expected to sweep across the area this evening.

Water levels are likely to keep rising, with roads becoming flooded. Please do not drive through floodwater, especially where warning signs have been put in place.

Just 30cm of flowing water can make a vehicle stuck or even sweep it away.

Winter is fast approaching and we’re encouraging everyone to check in on their loved ones as the weather turns colder.

We all have someone we care about who may need a little extra support if they have ill health or are less mobile.

Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing things that you can do to help us keep those we love safe and reduce false alarms.

We already have lots of good advice on our website- https://orlo.uk/GrFKE
