We are continuing to receive worrying reports around people swimming in open water during the hot weather.
Sgt Alex Taylor, the Community Beat Sergeant for the local area, said: “We are continuing to receive reports of people swimming at Apex Lakes & Millennium Lakes. This is of great concern to us given the tragic loss of much-loved Declan at the weekend.
“We understand the temptation during hot weather, but open water can be dangerous and life-threatening. The water will still be cold compared to the air temperature.
“Please look after your friends, make safe choices, and help keep everyone safe.”
The Royal Life Saving Society Water Safety Code is:
• Stop and think – Look out for dangers and signage, and follow any advice given.
• Stay together – Always go with friends or family and choose lifeguarded locations where possible.
• In an emergency – Call 999. Do not enter the water to attempt a rescue; call for help.
• Float – If you find yourself in trouble, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help. If someone else is in difficulty, throw them something that floats.
