🌟 Meet the Mayor – You’re Invited!
The new Mayor of Normanton, Cllr Tracy Morgan, is pleased to invite you to her ‘Meet the Mayor’ Coffee Morning on Friday 20th June, 10am–12pm at Normanton Town Hall.
Come along to meet the Mayor, learn more about her role, and hear about her fundraising plans for the year ahead.
❓"Why do we need a Mayor?"
We’ve seen a few comments asking this question, so here’s a quick explainer:
👩⚖️ It’s the law – Every Town Council must appoint a Chairman under the Local Government Act 1972. In towns, the Chairman is called the Mayor.
🗳️ Elected by councillors – The Mayor is chosen each May by the Town Council to chair meetings and represent Normanton.
🪑 Chair of the Council – The Mayor runs Council meetings and has a casting vote if there’s a tie. This is a key governance role — not just ceremonial.
💷 Cost? Just £2,200 a year – That’s less than 0.5% of the Council’s budget and works out at around 25p per household.
Not every Mayor uses the full amount, but the budget helps cover:
▪️ Contributions to local groups and good causes
▪️ Raffle tickets and support for other Mayors’ charity events
▪️ Tickets to attend civic and community functions
▪️ Modest hospitality – e.g. tea, coffee, or thank-you gifts for volunteers
▪️ Costs for events held to raise money for the Mayor’s Appeal
🎗️ Raises MORE than it costs – Last year’s Mayor raised over £3,500, and in the last 10 years, the Mayor’s Appeal has brought in almost £54,000 for local groups and charities!
🤝 Supports the community – The Mayor attends schools, local events, parades, remembrance services and more — promoting pride and unity in Normanton.
👥 Not a paid role – The Mayor, like all Town Councillors, is a volunteer. Councillors receive a small £200 annual allowance (subject to PAYE) to help cover expenses.
