Mount Stewart - National Trust

Mount Stewart - National Trust Mount Stewart is one of the most inspiring and unusual gardens in the National Trust's ownership with miles of countryside trails to explore
(840)

The garden reflects a rich tapestry of design and great planting artistry that was the hallmark of Edith, Lady Londonderry. The mild climate of Strangford Lough allows astonishing levels of planting experimentation. The formal areas exude a strong Mediterranean feel and resemble an Italian villa landscape; the wooded areas support a range of plants from all corners of the world, ensuring something to see whatever the season. Engaging tours of the opulent house reveal its fascinating heritage and historic world-famous artefacts and artwork. House Rules of our page:

We are delighted to announce a new exhibition and talk in the Mairi Garden.

These unique pieces have been created by ceramicist Eleanor Wheeler, along with ceramic ‘mandalas' created with groups Kilcooley Women’s Centre, Artsekta, staff and volunteers, all made at Mount Stewart.

🖌 Exhibition is on display in the Mairi Garden between from 10 - 24 Sep
📆Eleanor will lead a walk and talk about the work on Thurs 17 Sep 2-4pm.

The sculptures are inspired by some of the animals associated with the history of Mount Stewart, the gardens and the Londonderry family and aim to make links between the past, present.

The work reflects the history of this small formal garden designed by Lady Edith that used to contain animal sculptures and live creatures to amuse the children. Originally a Rock Garden, this garden was developed in the early 1920s at the time when Mairi was placed here in her pram every day to take in the sea air.

Some animals, such as the Stewart dragon and cheetah, were inspired by sculptures in the Dodo Walk and Italian Garden. Others are based on natural forms, plants and animals; such as monkeys puzzling.

With thanks to the HHGC for their continued support of this important project.

03/09/2026

This summer our team have been busy revamping the Lookout space, which was made possible through funding from the Northern Ireland Museums Council (NIMC), creating an exciting new hub for wildlife learning and discovery.

The Lookout is open 7 days a week and free to access.

At the heart of the refreshed space is a new taxidermy collection featuring many of the priority species found across the Mount Stewart estate. The collection provides visitors with a unique opportunity to learn more about the animals and birds that call the area home, while gaining a deeper understanding of the conservation work taking place to protect them.

The new look, Lookout is also an educational resource for visitors, schools, youth groups, and community organisations, helping to bring local wildlife stories to life. Through close-up encounters with the collection and engaging interpretation, visitors will discover how habitats are managed and restored to support biodiversity and ensure these species can thrive for generations to come.
