Have you noticed this white frothy goo on some plants? 🌼

It's called 'cuckoo spit', but it's actually nothing to do with cuckoos, or spit.

It's created when a tiny insect, called a Froghopper nymph, sucks the sap from the plants, leaving this bubbly froth. If you look closely, you can often see the little creature sat within the cuckoo spit. The cuckoo spit is a bit like bubble wrap for the baby froghopper - protecting it from dehydration and predators!

Nature certainly has some strange ways! 💚

Have you noticed lots of Painted Lady butterflies around recently? The recent hot weather has brought high numbers of these migratory butterflies to the UK 🦋

Every year, this beautiful species travels 9000 miles from North Africa and the Middle East to Europe and the Arctic. On rare occasions, such as in 2019, these butterflies have a bumper year and arrive in their millions.

Keep an eye out for their fluttering flight around the Park!

The buzz of insect life is in the air, and one creature you might notice along the trails are these little characters! Here are some caterpillars spotted in the Park this week 🐛

We've got the Dingy Flat-body moth caterpillar, which can be found in damp places, favouring Hemlock Water-Dropwort to munch on.

We also found hundreds of these impressive Peacock butterfly caterpillars, snacking on Common Nettle. It's hard to believe that these jet black caterpillars will turn into the bright Peacock butterflies! 🦋

Have you seen any caterpillars yet this year?
