Newry City Canal

Newry City Canal This page is to create awareness and debate about the need to reopen Newry City canal and inland navigation.

Happy Christmas everyone. Just to let you know their will be a New Year's Day walk along the Newry City section of the canal, showing sightseers how it will eventually be reopened. The tour will last 1hr (approx) with only a 5 min max stop at each sightseeing point, so it will be a good bit of exercise aswell. Participants will learn more about the heritage associated with the canal: John Mitchel's house and grave, his legal office and the school where he studied with that other great Irish patriot - John Martin. I am sure the canal was very active in their day. People like Mitchel and Martin appeal to the whole community and it is their association with our maritime heritage that helps to make it so interesting. If anyone wishes to book a place on the tour (it will be after lunch) then ring Francis on 07746486891. See notice in Newry Reporter.

Hi fellow canal heads: see enclosed some excellent contemporary photos of our canal by Mark Preece. With so many people unemployed in Newry, has anyone any ideas how we could make better use of our canal to create a few jobs?

Fraternally,

Francis
