505-Sqn-Reserves

505-Sqn-Reserves The only RAF Reserve squadron in the South West, based in Newquay. Actively recruiting ages 18-54.

As a Reserve you’ll get to live your normal life and use your spare-time to develop transferable skills, increase your self-confidence, meet people from a wide range of backgrounds and enjoy adventurous training opportunities. Reserves commit a minimum of 27 paid days per year on a renewable twelve year basis. Each year includes a two week (15 days) block for general RAF training, and at least 12

weekend or holiday days for additional training, trade training, or training exercises. While you may get the opportunity to train overseas as part of your annual 15-day training block, most of your time will be spent on a nearby RAF base. Each one of these has its own role, from front-line operations to training establishments. Like Regular RAF personnel, Reserves can be mobilised on expeditionary operations at some time. They can be deployed to a UK, overseas or temporary base for up to six months, plus another six months for pre-deployment training and post-deployment relaxation with your loved ones. During your time away you could be travelling with your unit, filling in for another member of the RAF, or working alongside Regulars and Reserves from other services. You could also be part of a small team dedicated to a particular job, or a big disaster relief mission.

Last weekend provided a great opportunity for our reservists to get back to training within their specialist roles.

Our newest MT drivers took part in training and familiarisation on articulated vehicles, while our more experienced drivers carried out vehicle inspections and maintenance on our Land Rovers.

Meanwhile, our Suppliers reorganised the field stores to ensure the squadron has the equipment needed for future deployments and exercises. In the mess, our chef was hard at work providing meals not only for squadron personnel, but also for visiting members of Plymouth & Cornwall Wing Air Cadets and the Army Cadets UK.

To round off the weekend, our Intelligence Analysts delivered briefings to bring the squadron up to date on recent global developments.

Last weekend saw a number of our reservists undertake their biannual Individual Readiness Training, this provides them with the vital military skills they need to support the RAF on operations around the world. Meanwhile, our Suppliers were undertaking refresher and trade training on MJDI, and our Intelligence Analysts were kept busy researching and creating intelligence update briefs to support RAF St Mawgan.

Recently our reservists undertook their first Duty Weekend of the year, despite the best efforts of Storm Goretti!

The majority of the reservists went through map reading revision, before putting their skills to the test in the local area. Our Human Resources trainees began their training and were introduced to some of the common items they would see on the Squadron, while our Intelligence Analysts researched and delivered a very engaging round up of recent world events.

Meanwhile our chef was deployed up to RAF Wittering refreshing his bread making skills under the watchful eyes of instructors from 504-Sqn-RAFReserves.
