Introducing Scotch 👋

This handsome fellow was found struggling to get up a curb and limping on one of his hind legs. X-rays revealed the cause – a fractured kneecap. Ouch!

After several weeks of anti-inflammatories, pain relief, and plenty of rest, the soft tissue swelling has gone down, and we’re delighted to say he’s now walking almost normally. With a little more recovery time, we’re hopeful Scotch will soon be ready to head back to the wild where he belongs 🙌🌿

A huge thank you to our wonderful vets St Clement Veterinary Clinic for their expert care, and to our hutch sponsor, Star Refuse Collection, for helping support Scotch during his recovery. We couldn’t do it without you! 🫶

Our first hand-raised hoglet of the year has been released back into the wild! 💚🦔🐾

She will shortly be followed by her brother Blue. These two were the earliest hoglet admissions we’ve ever received, arriving at the end of April—a clear reminder of how our increasingly variable weather and blurred seasons are affecting wildlife.

So far this year, we’ve admitted 32 hoglets, with 22 arriving at less than two weeks old. Hand-raising hoglets this young is incredibly rewarding, but it also requires round-the-clock care, specialist equipment, formula, incubators, and countless hours of dedication from our team.

If you’d like to help us continue giving vulnerable hoglets the best possible start, you can support us by:

Every donation, big or small, helps us give more tiny hoglets like Belle and Blue a second chance. Thank you for making stories like Belle’s possible 🫶

It’s been a busy start to June, with 17 releases already! 💚🦔🐾

One of those lucky hedgehogs was the gorgeous Nike, who has now headed back to the wild.

Nike came into our care with hind leg weakness and was initially walking on the outside of his feet, causing wear and damage. Since then, he has been undergoing physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to build strength and improve his mobility.

A huge thank you to St Clement Veterinary Clinic and our wonderful volunteers for all the time, care, and dedication they gave to his rehabilitation.

Seeing him return to the wild is a fantastic reward for everyone’s efforts. We hope Nike is enjoying his freedom and thriving back where he belongs 💚🦔🐾

RELEASE SITES NEEDED ACROSS CORNWALL 🦔🐾

As admissions continue to rise and patterns of where hedgehogs are coming from change, we need to strengthen our network of approved release sites across Cornwall.

Wherever possible, rehabilitated hedgehogs are returned close to where they were found. When this isn’t safe or possible, we rely on our network of carefully selected release sites to get them back to the same area and give them the best chance of survival.

We are particularly looking for new release sites in:
📍 Penzance📍 Camborne📍 Redruth
📍 Truro📍 Wadebridge📍 Bodmin
📍 Saltash

To be considered, sites must meet specific criteria. Urban and rural locations are equally valuable.

Think you could help? Visit our website to view the full criteria and submit an application:

Please share this post to help us fill the gaps on the map and ensure every hedgehog has the best possible chance of a successful return to the wild 🦔💚

Hoglet season is here! 🦔🐾

Please take extra care when gardening or checking nest boxes at this time of year. Hedgehog mums are very sensitive to disturbance and can abandon their young if stressed.

If you accidentally uncover a nest of hoglets:
• Do not touch them
• Carefully cover the nest back over
• Contact a rescue for advice immediately

Thank you for helping keep our hedgehogs safe 💚

Just 24 hours old, cold, weak, and now battling pneumonia. They’re on antibiotics and currently taking feeds well.

Please keep everything crossed for these little ones🤞🐾

🦔 Respect the rescue process 🦔

Recently, our team has been experiencing an increasing number of difficult phone calls, and we feel it’s important to explain why we ask the questions we do.

When you contact us about an injured, orphaned, or unwell hedgehog, we understand the situation can be stressful and upsetting. Our team work through a series of triage questions to assess the hedgehog’s condition and determine the most appropriate course of action as quickly as possible.

These questions are not for our convenience—they are essential in helping us provide the right advice and support. The guidance we give is tailored to each case and always based on what is best for the hedgehog. In some cases, admission to rescue may not be the best option.

Unfortunately, we are increasingly finding that our team is being interrupted, dismissed, or spoken to rudely while trying to help. This is very disheartening for the team and does nothing to help the hedgehog concerned.

Calling a rescue is an important first step, but it is only the first step. We are a charity, not an emergency service, and while we do everything we can to help, we cannot instantly collect every hedgehog or override the realities of time, distance, and resources. Our processes exist for a reason and are based on years of experience and a commitment to hedgehog welfare.

If you contact us for advice, please answer our questions and follow the guidance given. Working together gives the hedgehog the best chance of receiving the help it needs.

We’re probably preaching to the converted, as many of our followers already understand and support what we do. However, we’d be grateful if you could share this post to help others understand how wildlife rescue works and why cooperation during the triage process is so important.

Thank you to everyone who supports us and treats our team with kindness and respect 🫶
