Commemorating 86 years since the sinking of HMY Campeador V!
HMY Campeador V was built in Dartmouth in 1938 as a private motor yacht for a Mr. MacAndrew Esq. The Following year, at the outbreak of WW2, Mr. MacAndrew Esq. offered up the Campeador V for Admiralty patrol work where he and 2 other members of the Royal Dart Yacht Club volunteered to crew the vessel.
On the 23rd February 1940, the Campeador V was requisitioned for war service and harbour patrol duties at a lease rate of £60 per month (about £2,988 today).
On the 22nd June 1940, whilst patrolling the waters just off of Bembridge, HMY Campeador V struck a magnetic mine and sunk. As many as twenty lives were lost, with only two crew members picked up by emergency response vessels.
