✝️ A New Cross for Balmerino Abbey ✝️
We are delighted to unveil the beautiful new oak cross now standing within the grounds of Balmerino Abbey.
The cross has been handcrafted from solid oak and replaces the previous cross that stood on the site for many years. Its installation marks another chapter in the ongoing care and conservation of this special historic place.
A huge thank you goes to Andrew Laing & Son Joiners for their superb craftsmanship and expertise, and to the Balmerino History Group for organising and securing the funding that made the project possible.
The new cross stands as a simple but powerful reminder of the Abbey's spiritual heritage and the generations of people who have worshipped, worked and found peace here over the centuries.
If you're looking for a reason to get outdoors this weekend, why not take a stroll around the Abbey grounds and see the new cross for yourself? While you're here, enjoy the ancient ruins, the magnificent Spanish Chestnut tree, and the tranquillity of one of Fife's most remarkable historic sites.
Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this project to life.

Looking after Balmerino Abbey for the future...

We’ve recently installed permanent survey markers at Balmerino Abbey — a small but important step that will help us care for this special place for years to come.

These markers allow us to accurately monitor any movement or change within the structure over time, helping to protect and preserve the abbey’s historic fabric.

The installation was carried out in collaboration with the National Trust for Scotland buildings team, Historic Environment Scotland, and AOC Archaeology Group.
Working together, we’re ensuring that Balmerino Abbey continues to be understood, protected, and enjoyed long into the future.

🌼 Now is the perfect time to visit Balmerino Abbey and see one of Scotland’s largest colonies of winter aconites in bloom. 🌼
Thousands of bright yellow flowers form a glowing carpet beneath the ancient chestnut tree, marking the anniversary of the death of Queen Ermengarde on 12th February.
These delicate blooms are a living reminder of the mystery surrounding her remains. Buried at the high altar in 1233, possibly moved by monks during the Reformation or later discovered in 1831. What really happened? Come and decide for yourself.
Visitors who braved the weather on Saturday enjoyed a special NTS guided tour, learning first-hand how the National Trust for Scotland is caring for this special place and helping to reawaken the story — and the mystery — of Queen Ermengarde.
✨ Don’t miss this magical moment in the abbey’s calendar. Visit soon, experience it for yourself...and share photos! ✨
