I wrote this for East Anglia Bylines to illustrate the power of citizen action and how I went from a citizen to a District Councillor to make our recycling scheme a reality.

Don’t ask for permission if you want to make a change; get out there and just do it.

It isn’t necessarily easy, but it’s extremely rewarding.

We stood up as a community, fought back and forced Suffolk County Council to admit they were wrong to cut our bus services. This is the only the beginning. A modern, thriving Newmarket needs modern and reliable public transport.

I started this project as a concerned citizen, and ended up as a Councillor in Newmarket to get it done. Thrilled to have had both the privilege of turning this idea into a reality *and* the opportunity to serve the residents of Newmarket.

Plans in England to introduce a deposit return scheme have been pushed back to 2027 but one part of the country is leading the way with a pioneering scheme to tackle plastic waste

This victory was all about citizen action. We will not allow our bus services to be degraded anymore. I will continue to advocate for much better for the residents of Newmarket.
