IMPORTANT NOTICE: Cambusnethan Priory is an extremely dangerous building - do not enter. Photos only from outside please

My own interest in The Priory, as it is known locally, dates from my childhood. I grew up on the very edge of the Clyde Valley on the Larkhall side, down an ancient farm road which may even once have been a direct route to the Priory. I would see the lovely building from across the valley, shining in the sun but surrounded by dark forest, like a fairytale castle. To me it was the oldest, most mysterious building I knew of. Sadly it was gutted by fire in the 1980s and now only the golden sandstone shell remains, although the stunning gothic carvings remain visible. From across the valley it is not even obvious that it is now a ruin but ultimately every year brings further decline in its state. I later explored the ruins as a teenage and, I am ashamed to admit, I took a piece of stucco in the shape of a bunch of grapes which had fallen off the wall. At that time the internal staircase was still standing but not for long. So enamoured was I by the place that I took my husband there on our first date to explore the ruins! Through other FB pages I have learned that a lot of people care about the state of this once beautiful house so I have decided to set-up this page to record their thoughts and memories. We have lost so much of our heritage - Hamilton Palace, Mauldslie Castle, Stonebyres house to name but a few. Let's preserve as much as we can about Cambusnethan Priory before it too is lost.

Many thanks to Shazza G-ray for finding this. To the best of my knowledge, this is one if the projects drawn up by students from Edinburgh University who visited the Priory with Grand Bequest, who support our project. All of the information re Council involvement are hypothetical to the best of my knowledge. A very good project though. https://www.2022.graduateshow.eca.ed.ac.uk/portfolio/lauren-laroche?fbclid=IwAR1CwDcYLx0WKVzzOWYSHaVPpyGbr13qTPLPo2mutx-l6yKcyiasSWpkQN0

Evening all! Sorry we've been quiet for quite some time, but due to health issues and other matters, our committee have taken a bit of a beating and we need new volunteers!! In particular, we need an admin person(s), ideally who can deal with accounts and someone who preferably has good experience as a Project Manager. If you want to help save the Priory and can spare us these skills, please pm us on the page. Many thanks. FOCP Committee.

Anyone wanting to join the members page you DO have to answer the questions to join. We do need to update the questions now, as they were written before we had our Outdoor Team, so dont worry about answering yes or no, what we need mostly are people to help run events. Tx. :)

Many thanks to John Walkinshaw for finding these on Canmore and posting on the Lost Houses page. I definitely have never seen them before, not in colour anyway, and they are from the ''Livingston Architect Team'' era. :)

Just posted by Rab McMillan on the Wishaw page, this is George Gray attempting a ''horselift''. First time i've seen this one, in the one I saw, it was a cow. :) Also, this is what the slope behind the Priory looks like without trees.

Merry Christmas to all our followers, friends and anyone who 'discovers' the Priory to come. 2022 has been a challenging year, particularly amongst our team where we have had key members seriously ill and a number bereaved. Couple this with Covid and you are left with a very quiet year for activities!!! BUT we are still here, still fighting to save the Priory and still looking for help and new ideas. So if you can spare us some time every so often, we would love to hear from you. (We are particularly looking for people who work in accountancy to help with the books, we do have a member who does them, but add that to a day job and it's a lot of work, especially as we are all volunteers). Anyway, with volunteers in mind, from everyone at FOCP, we wish you all the best and a Happy New 2023 when it comes. :)

Many thanks to everyone who came to visit our stall at Orchard Primary on Saturday and Ravenscraig on Sunday, also thanks to Dallas Carter and John Smillie for covering Saturday and braving the cold on Sunday as well!! :O It was great to meet more people and spread the word about The Priory and its future purpose in the community. We became very concious that times are tough, especially on the 2nd day, this again emphasises the need for community projects like ours, which people can enjoy and not require much money to do so. We hope everyone has the best Christmas that they can and hopefully times wont take too long to change for the better. Thank you all again. FOCP.
