🦈🐊 Did You Know? 🚒
The Holmatro Cutter, used by ESFRS crews during road traffic collisions and rescue operations, delivers a theoretical cutting force of 77.9 tonnes*.

To put that into perspective, that's more force than some of the most powerful bites ever recorded in nature:

🦈 Great White Shark – approximately 2 tonnes*
🐊 Saltwater Crocodile – approximately 1.8 tonnes*
🦛 Hippopotamus – approximately 0.9 tonnes*
🦖 Tyrannosaurus rex – estimated 6 tonnes*
🦈 Megalodon – estimated 12–20 tonnes*
🐊 Deinosuchus – estimated 35+ tonnes*

Our cutters produces more than double the estimated bite force of Deinosuchus, one of the most powerful predators ever to walk the Earth.

While nature evolved these incredible forces for survival, we use ours to save lives — cutting through modern vehicle structures to help rescue casualties when every second counts.

Take a walk around and you'll see all these 'H-signs’. Have you ever wondered what they mean?

They exist to tell us firefighters where the nearest ‘fire hydrant is located'.

Simple, right? Well, there’s a bit more to it. Those yellow and black signs are crucial for us because they make hydrants easy to find fast when we need them as standard fire engines in the UK only hold 1,800 litres of water which can be used in less than 5 minutes depending on what we use.

The number at the top of the ‘H’ shows the diameter of the water main, so we know exactly what size hydrant we are dealing with.

The number underneath the 'H' tells us how far away the hydrant is.

Now you know please be on the lookout and don’t block or park over them

Did you know that fire service staff attending any premises (whether private or commercial) on fire service duties will always be in uniform and will be able to produce ID on request?

We will absolutely never ask for any money and we'll never be offended if you want to contact us to double check who we are.

If you are unsure whether you should allow someone access, please call 0303 999 1000 during office hours. For more information visit: https://www.esfrs.org/verifying-our-staff

4 May is , a time to honour all firefighters past and present and remember all Firefighters who have lost their lives while serving their communities.

Today, our Red Watch crew at Newhaven Community Fire Station pause to pay their respects, reflecting on the courage, dedication, and sacrifice shown by those who gave everything to protect others.

We stand together in remembrance.

Ever wondered how much hose is carried on a fire engine? 🚒

It’s a lot more than you might think—nearly 450 metres in total! That’s enough hose to reach the top of the Elizabeth Tower (commonly known as Big Ben), which is 96 metres tall—and you’d still have enough left to reach all the way up the Eiffel Tower, which stands at 330 metres.

Here’s the breakdown on our P1 at Newhaven:
• 115m of 70mm lay flat hose
• 46m of 51mm lay flat hose
• 115m of 45mm lay flat hose
• 90.3m of 19mm hose reel tubing
• 5m of 70mm filling length
• 5m of 45mm filling length
• 55m of 38mm CAFS hose reel
• 5m of 45mm CAFS adapter length
• 5m of 70mm CAFS adapter length
• 7.1m of 100mm hard suction hose

All of this equipment ensures crews are ready for everything from small incidents to large-scale fires—delivering water exactly where it’s needed, when it’s needed most.

It’s a great opportunity to build more inclusive communication and better understand your local community.

If you unexpectedly fall into water, cold water shock can take your breath away. Fight the instinct to panic and
➡ Tilt your head back
➡ Keep your ears submerged
➡ Relax and spread your arms and legs

It could save your life.
