It is always nice to start the new year with positivity, I tell myself every January 1st. As many people know, working in the charity sector is not for the faint-hearted. You never know what each day will bring. Here at BWtL, we are always trying to do the best we can for the people we work with, with what we have. Time, money, and people are huge key factors in our efforts.

Today, we received an email which boosted morale hugely. We have been recognised by one of our long-time funders as a potential recipient of their Giving Network initiative. This is for those charities that are 'making a difference in the region.'

There are thousands of charities in the North East, all doing incredible work, despite the obstacles we all face in the day-to-day running of our organisations. So, to be considered for this opportunity is absolutely fantastic, and we are excited to see if the work we do here at BWtL is enough to get us to the final four.

But even if it isn't, we will never give up doing what we do.

We've had the pleasure of working with six Newcastle University students since October. As part of their final year project, they provided findings that will help us develop new strategies in both delivery and marketing.

These students have really blown it out of the park and we are so very thankful of both them and the university for selecting us to be apart of their final year programme 👏

Here we have Northern Butterflies! Through their work with us, they’re creating a bi-monthly newsletter to keep their stakeholders up-to-date with everything they're doing. All of the content ideation and writing is done by them! 🦋

In our recent sessions, they interviewed Northern Butterflies' founder, Sam, wrote about their history and what they’ve been up to with Lights of Life.

We don’t say 'nosy', we say it’s being inquisitive 😉

Allowing children to ask questions encourages curiosity and with the right support, curiosity can turn into confidence.

One school we've had a long-standing relationship with is Emmaville Primary in Crawcrook, Gateshead 📚

Over 10 years, we've worked with almost 100 pupils ranging from year 4 to year 6 on their school magazine, and over 1,200 students have participated in our annual writing competition.

Being involved in creating a school magazine allows the students to write about what they love, which is what writing is all about 📝

Here's a snapshot of one of the many newsletters we've done together 👇

12 years ago, Bringing Words to Life was, quite literally, brought to life by former hip-hop journalist Melanie J Cornish-Fleet✍️

Using the skills she developed in her writing career, Melanie led her first journalism workshop in 2007 at a primary school in Gateshead.

Working with this group of children, Melanie realised that they enjoyed writing from experience. From there, she realised she could encourage children across the North East to develop additional literacy traits they shied away from in the classroom.

By 2013, Bringing Words to Life became a registered charity with Melanie as CEO 🎉

Since then, the charity has worked with over 10,000 people across 60 schools and 30 community groups, empowering individuals to write with purpose and progress in day-to-day life.

The North East is not the only area that has to contend with literacy issues. Having access to more programs that benefit a greater number of people in the UK is what we strive to achieve. It’s in our nature to help people lead fulfilling lives while encouraging aspirations ⭐️

Some great feedback from an online workshop we delivered to young people in Wakefield last month :-)

"Coming into the month, we had a meeting with a very special Melanie. She is a journalist with a very exciting past behind her. She opened up about her journeys and helped us understand the intricacies of being a journalist and the main focuses and guidelines there are when it comes to being a journalist. We spoke about who our audiences were and how to approach and make our work open to larger audiences, as well as the very exciting future ahead for the Arts Ambassadors. This should enlighten us on how to work in the future and what we need to take into account when doing so. A very special thank you to Melanie J Cornish-Fleet for once again having the meeting with us and giving us inspiration for our future work."
