NewcastleParks Caring for your city's green spaces

Meet Ronny, one of our amazing parks volunteers 💚

Ronny joined our parks volunteer team earlier this year and is already making a big difference. Alongside our other dedicated volunteers, Ronny helps keep our parks clean, green and welcoming spaces for everyone to enjoy.

📸 Ronny (pictured here on the left) said: “I wanted to volunteer to help protect the environment and meet more people. It’s really helped me expand my social circle. I enjoy spending time in the beautiful park, picking up litter and gardening with others. Everyone is so friendly and supportive.

"Although my hearing isn’t very good and I usually communicate using text on my phone, both volunteers and staff have been incredibly kind. It makes me very happy to contribute. I feel proud when the park looks clean and I’d encourage anyone interested to get involved and sign up!”

On your bike for half term! 🚲

Newcastle City Council is working with Walk Wheel Cycle Trust to offer FREE Learn to Ride sessions for children aged 5-12 in the May half term.

The sessions will take place at Hodgkin Park on Wednesday 27 May across three sessions – 10am, 12pm and 3pm.

They aim to have most of the children cycling without stabilisers by the end of the sessions. If they don’t quite manage it within the sessions, it is hoped that they can continue to practice the technique at home and should be ready to ride soon, and the staff member running the session will be able to advise you on this.
• Your child must bring a bike that is small enough for their feet to easily touch the ground.
• The bike must have good working front and rear brakes and well pumped-up tyres.
• The bike must be in good condition as there is no time to do maintenance. You can find guidance on checking bikes on our website.
• Please remove the stabilisers before bringing the bike to school.
• Your child must have a well-fitting bike helmet.
• Your child should wear appropriate clothing and bring water with them.

If any of this is a problem for you, please email [email protected] and we'll try to make arrangements for you. Staff running the sessions are first aid trained and hold an enhanced DBS certificate.

Update on our plans for the Park Cafés☕️

We have seen your comments on last week's post about our difficult decision to close both cafés in Exhibition Park and Paddy Freeman’s Park and we wanted to give a bit of an update.

Last week we told you how falling demand, seasonal footfall and rising operating costs meant the cafés were costing the council £200,000 to run. That is council taxpayer money that is then taken away from maintaining the parks, green spaces and play areas.

Despite recent investment and staffing changes, sales have continued to decline over the last 10 months, so the cafés cannot continue in their current form. That led to the decision for them to close.

We wanted to provide a bit more clarity on our plans for the buildings because we know how much our residents care about thriving green spaces, and what the cafés meant to park users.

💡 Our intention is to commission a local independent catering provider to bring the cafés back into use in the coming months but this is not something we could do before temporarily closing the cafes.

We’ve successfully used this approach at the Civic Centre and City Library, where independent operators now offer high quality local services.

Since our closure announcement we have already had expressions of interest, and we will be working with our procurement team to get the best catering offer in place for Exhibition Park and Paddy Freeman’s Park.

This decision helps protect funding for vital frontline services, while ensuring we continue to invest in our city’s parks. Since bringing park management back in house last year, we’ve:

🏅 Achieved Green Flag status for four parks
🎠 Secured £1.5m to rejuvenate play areas across Newcastle

We remain committed to supporting staff and improving our parks for everyone who uses and enjoys them.

We know the closures will provide some short term disruption but we hope these steps will lead to a brighter future 🙏

☕ Update on Park Cafés in Newcastle 🌳

We have taken the difficult decision to close the cafés at Paddy Freeman’s Park and Exhibition Park following a detailed review of their viability.

Despite recent investment and staffing changes, both cafés have been hit by falling demand, seasonal footfall and rising operating costs. Over the last 10 months, sales have continued to decline, and projections show the venues would cost taxpayers more than £200,000 a year to keep open.

📍 What this means:
• The café at Paddy Freeman’s Park will close with immediate effect from today (Tuesday 27th January)
• The Exhibition Park café will remain open for at least two weeks
• Staff will be supported, with opportunities to apply for alternative roles within the council

The cafés add value to park users, but running them at a loss would take funding away from other vital frontline services.

🏞️ Importantly, the café buildings will remain part of the parks service, and future opportunities to bring them back into use will be explored.

Since parks management returned to the council last year, Newcastle has seen:
🌟 Four parks awarded Green Flag status
🎠 £1.5 million approved to improve and rejuvenate play areas across the city

We are supporting staff and continuing to invest in parks remains a top priority.

Community Fitness in the Park! 🌿

The Bandstand, Exhibition Park
Starting Saturday 17th January 2026 · Weekly · 10am

At Anna’s Place, our mission is simple: make movement and community accessible for everyone. No experience needed. No “ideal” body type. No pressure. Just you, fresh air, and a friendly group of humans doing their best to feel good.

✨ What to expect:
A beautiful blend of yoga + pilates, big skies overhead, plenty of deep breaths, and the kind of movement that welcomes creaky hips, busy minds, curious beginners, and returning movers alike. If you want both “let’s go” and “let’s rest” in one session… this is your space.

☕ After class?
Wander with us to the café for coffee and chat — because connection is just as nourishing as movement… and coffee absolutely counts as community fuel.

Come join us, bring a friend, or make a new one.

Let’s move, breathe, and feel at home in our bodies — together. 💚
