It was a pleasure to welcome Alan Campbell and Councillor Brian Burdis to our IT department, where we had the opportunity to showcase the excellent work our team delivers in support of both staff and patients.

Thank you both for the time you spent with us.

It was a pleasure to visit the IT Department at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and meet the team helping to drive digital innovation across our local health services.

A big thank you to Executive Chief Digital Officer David Elliott and colleagues for taking the time to show us the vital work being done behind the scenes to support patients, staff and services across the Trust.

Technology plays an increasingly important role in delivering high-quality healthcare, and it was fascinating to hear about the opportunities and challenges involved in maintaining and developing the digital systems that support patient care every day.

Thank you again to everyone who welcomed us and shared their expertise.

We're delighted that two Northumbria Healthcare projects have been shortlisted for the 2026 Picker Experience Network (PEN) Awards, recognising teams that are making a real difference to patient experience.

Healthcare Navigators has been shortlisted in the Equity in Experience category, while Creating a Legacy for Amber has been recognised in the Partnership Working category.

A fantastic achievement that reflects the dedication, innovation and compassion of everyone involved. Congratulations and good luck to both teams!

Next month marks a very special milestone for Melanie Jewitt, activity co-ordinator on Ward 4 (previously also Ward 2) at Hexham General Hospital, who will celebrate 10 years in the role supporting elderly patients.

Melanie previously worked as an auxiliary nurse before becoming the ward's first activity co-ordinator, creating a role that has since become her passion and has brought joy and companionship to countless patients.

From pamper sessions and afternoon teas to craft activities and movie afternoons, Melanie works tirelessly to create moments of joy, helping patients stay active, engaged and less isolated during their hospital stay.

Some of her ideas include a talking tabard featuring familiar items such as dolls, dummies and sewing thimbles to spark memories, as well as activity boards featuring old tools, locks and tape measures that help patients reminisce about their younger years.

Her work is about much more than activities. It's about helping patients smile, share memories and feel less lonely during their time in hospital.

As Melanie approaches 10 years in the role, we'd like to thank her for the compassion she brings to Ward 4 💙
