The Joseph Cowen Centre in Newcastle is a drop-in hub for rough sleepers and people experiencing homelessness, social and financial exclusion, and with limited access to mainstream services. Many people who visit the Centre don’t have access to basic necessities, and something as simple as a hot drink and a listening ear can make a world of difference.

It’s a lifeline for some of our community’s most vulnerable. Here, people can access health and wellbeing services, pick up some warm clothes, or simply get out of the cold for a bit.

Last year, we helped over 900 people, and with your help, we can do even more. Your donation, no matter how small, will help put a smile on the faces of those who need it most. Help us make somebody’s Christmas today: https://bit.ly/4iv05bL

Irena, one of our amazing housing support workers, is on a mission this Christmas to help support our residents through what can often be a difficult time of the year. Thanks to the generosity of many of our staff and supporters, Irena has started collecting donations to ensure those who are experiencing homelessness can give a gift to their loved ones this festive period ❄️🎁

Financial difficulties sadly mean that some of the people we support are unable to spend money on gifts for the people they love the most - no matter how much they would like to. Many of the people Irena supports are parents who face the heartbreaking reality of being unable to give their children a present this Christmas.

We’d hugely appreciate anyone who wants to support Irena’s appeal to donate any suitable gifts to Byker Bridge House on Wilfred Street, Byker. We’d particularly welcome children’s toys, shower and bath sets, essential baby items, child and adult board games, and other, more sentimental gifts.

We would also gladly receive other items that would benefit those who are currently experiencing homelessness including warm clothes, sleeping bags, blankets, hats and gloves. These can be dropped off at the Joseph Cowen Centre again on Wilfred Street.

From all of us at Tyne, we hope you have a happy holiday season ⛄

We’re delighted to be working with our friends at Ouseburn Farm Charity Ltd Farm Charity Ltd, who have received funding from The National Lottery Community Fund for the new ‘Better Together’ project! Thank you to National Lottery players for helping .

Better Together aims to give people experiencing homelessness the opportunity to participate in their community and make a difference in their local area - all whilst developing new skills and confidence!

The project will expand on two small pilot projects; one working with a group of people experiencing homelessness to renovate an outside space within their temporary accommodation, and another involving a community clean-up in Ouseburn Valley. Both of these projects had excellent engagement and made a real difference to those involved, particularly around their wellbeing and feeling connected to their community.

The project was shaped around consultation with people experiencing homelessness, and will expand these two projects with a 12-month programme of focussed work. In small groups, residents in supported and emergency accommodation will design and deliver their own ‘green’ projects around where they live - working closely with the farm’s horticulturalists in the process!

Watch this space for more updates as the project progresses!
