🧠 Psychology in the Real World! 🌐

Last week, our A-Level Psychology students swapped the classroom for the lecture halls at Newcastle University! They headed over to the historic George VI building for an immersive look at where their studies can take them.

The day was packed with hands-on learning, aiming to stretch their understanding of Attachment Theory and open doors to future career paths.

Here is what they got up to:

✨Interactive Workshops: Students tackled real-world scenarios using professional tools like "diamond ranking" and the "appreciative inquiry process"—collaborating to design the ultimate safe, welcoming, and inclusive school. 🏫✨
✨Meeting the Experts: They met with trainee Educational Psychologists to get the inside scoop on the profession.
✨Career Mapping: Students mapped out the journey to becoming an Ed Psych, learning all about British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited degrees and the vital importance of gaining direct experience working with young people.

🏆 Inspiring the Next Generation!

We had a very special guest join us today for our Project Lesson, and we are still buzzing with excitement!

Huge thanks to Maissae Drissennek, Senior Quality Engineer at Magna International (and a very proud auntie to one of our own students!), who came in to deliver an incredible career talk to our students.

Maissae recently won the prestigious "Women Who Inspire in Automotive Award" hosted by the North East Automotive Alliance. As part of her amazing achievement, she was granted £2,000 to donate to a school or charity of her choice—and she chose us! 🤩

Seeing someone succeed at such a high level in the STEM and automotive industry is incredibly motivating for our pupils. We are so grateful for Maissae's time, her inspiring words, and her amazing generosity.

This generous donation will go a long way in supporting our students' learning and future projects. Thank you, Maissae, and a huge congratulations again on your well-deserved award! 👏👏

It’s Men’s Health Week (15-21 June), and at NEF UTC, we’re looking at health through the lens of STEM. 🛠️🔬

Did you know that 1 in 5 men dies before the age of 65? Many of these health issues are preventable, but stigma and a lack of professional advice often stand in the way.

This week, we’re highlighting how STEM is saving lives:

➡️Data Science: Identifying patterns to improve su***de prevention and intervention.
➡️Biomedicine: Advancing early detection for conditions like prostate health and diabetes.
➡️Digital Health: Engineering apps and wearables that make seeking advice and tracking health easier for men and boys.

We’re also opening the conversation on mental health. Su***de prevention is a vital part of health awareness—understanding the science of wellbeing is just as important as understanding the science of engineering. 🧠💡

We are back with another instalment of our Staff Career Journeys! Today, we are proud to showcase Andrew Noakes, our Teacher of Science at North East Futures UTC. 🚀

Andrew’s journey is a phenomenal example of how science can open doors to global industry careers before bringing that invaluable, real-world expertise directly into the classroom. His path is proof that exploring different industries and taking your time to find your passion pays off!

Andrew’s Journey
✨Early Foundations: Andrew completed his A-Levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Law. Afterwards, he took some time out to plan his next steps, gaining leadership experience working as a Bar and Restaurant Manager.
✨Higher Education: He then headed to Newcastle University, where he earned his degree in Material Science with Analytical Chemistry. 🧪
✨Global Industry Career: Andrew joined global manufacturing giant AkzoNobel, working in Paint Chemistry & International Raw Material Procurement. This incredible role allowed him to work and live all over the world! 🌍
✨Transition to Teaching: Deciding to inspire the next generation of scientists, Andrew completed his PGCE at Durham University.
✨North East Futures UTC: Andrew joined our team as a Teacher of Science, where he also brings his unique skills outside the lab as a qualified swimming instructor, kayaking instructor, and lifeguard! 🚣‍♂️🏊‍♂️
