*Moderation policy*
In general, we don’t moderate posts – except on the rare occasion that someone has used offensive language or made libellous allegations about named or identifiable individuals on our page. We have a duty to protect our staff and volunteers, so while deleting comments is totally out of character for us, our legal position is that any post containing a libellous accusations, should be removed. If an individual continues to post offensive, threatening or libellous content then we’ll be forced to block that person from the page. That’s it, you’ve made it to the end of the first week back at school 🎉 Whether everyone’s feeling tired and fractious or bursting with pent-up energy, reclaim some family time in the fresh air with a walk at your local National Trust place.

🌳 Explore the great outdoors at Allen Banks & Staward Gorge NT, where you’ll find a deep gorge with the River Allen running through it, and the largest area of ancient semi-natural woodland in Northumberland. With lots of paths to choose from, it’s the perfect setting for a fairy-tale adventure.

🪨 A walk at NT Cragside can feel like you're discovering an unknown land. Take on a quest through dynamited ravines or between rock formations to sparkling lakes. There are plenty of outdoor play areas and a labyrinth to explore too.

🦭 Sea air, clifftop meadows, beautiful beaches… Discover a striking stretch of coastline at Souter Lighthouse and the Leas. Head north across the Leas towards South Shields or south to Whitburn Coastal Park – whichever way you decide, make sure to look out for seals popping their heads above water.

End the summer holidays on a high with a memorable day out at a National Trust place here in the North East:

🐉 Cycle the Dragon trail out onto the wider estate at Wallington NT. With bike hire on site and two family-friendly routes to choose from, you can go as far (or stay as near) as you like.

🎭 Head to the West Wing for a recreation of one of the most famous Delaval pranks - the Upside Down room, before taking to the stage on National Trust Seaton Delaval Hall's Baroque-inspired travelling theatre. Delve into the giant box of theatrical props and give us your best performance.

🍄 Hide in the mushroom playhouse, crawl through the otter holt or make your own music on the giant guiros at Gibside - National Trust's adventure play area. Bucket swings, a zip-wire and climbing fort also await.

🧙‍♂️ Go on a quest to find Nelly’s Den at the heart of a giant maze cut into a forest of rhododendron inside NT Cragside's Labyrinth.

If you’re looking for pooch-perfect places to take your dog this summer, try a National Trust place near you.

🐕 Gibside - National Trust (photo 1): Your four-legged friends will enjoy Gibside as much as you do, with 15 miles of paths to roam. Extendable leads are fine everywhere except the Skyline Walk where there may be livestock.

🐕Wallington NT (photo 2): There are miles of walks to explore – and doggy treats in the café and shop. Dogs on leads can go in almost all outdoor areas except the play area.

🐕 Ormesby Hall - National Trust: With acres of parkland to explore, including woodland walks and the garden, Ormesby is a great place to share with your faithful companion.

🐕National Trust Seaton Delaval Hall: With plenty of ground to cover and woodlands to wander, Seaton Delaval Hall is the perfect place to walk your dog. They’re allowed in all outdoor areas except the play area.

🐕 Crook Hall Gardens National Trust: Take your dog for a wander through a series of interlinking gardens, each with its own style and character. The hall’s the only place dogs can’t go.

When it comes to keeping children entertained and burning off energy over the summer holidays, is there anything better than a good adventure playground? Here are our top four in the North East:

🛝 Wallington NT: The play train at Wallington is something special. Situated in the woods alongside its own station platform, the colourful locomotive is great fun to climb on, and encourages imaginative play. The train is one of four play areas at Wallington, along with the play fort, Little Acorns nature play space and the adventure playground.

🛝 Gibside - National Trust: Follow the Explorer Trail to discover the Red Kite adventure play area, tackle the West Wood workout, create a secret hideaway in the den building area, or eat and play outside the Market Place Café.

🛝 NT Cragside: Let the kids run free in the adventure playground, where they can balance on the beams of the log mountain, climb the witch’s hat, glide on a zip wire and slide down tunnels. If that’s not enough to tire them out, there also a trim trail between the play area and labyrinth with monkey bars, cargo nets, tyre swings and more.

🛝 National Trust Seaton Delaval Hall: For a different kind of outdoor play experience, try the Delaval Playdium. As well as the more traditional adventure play equipment like swings, rope walk, slide and scramble net, you’ll find a centrepiece stage with theatre mechanics, hidden thunderclaps and rain cloud sounds.

We remain deeply concerned about the contamination of nurdles across the North East coastline and the long-term impact that the plastic-pollution will have on the coast and its wildlife. The places that we care for across the coast are home to birds, fish and other marine animals that can mistake the tiny plastic pellets for food.

We’re hugely grateful to the number of volunteers, environmental organisations and local authorities who have been responding to this devastating incident. We’ll continue to support the clean-up operation and monitor the effects that the spill will have on the marine coastline.
