💥 Fiona Larkin at Middlesbrough Art Weekender, 24 September 2022 💥

We’re excited to announce two upcoming events with Fiona Larkin at Middlesbrough Art Weekender, as part of our co-commission with MIMA; where Fiona will be presenting some of the outcomes of her research into the Middlesbrough Collection and Library Archive.

🔶 Hearing From Artists: Fiona Larkin
Sat 24 Sept 2022, 11:00 – 12:00, MIMA
Join Fiona Larkin as she introduces her new publication, Soft Power Soft Fictions, made in response to the Women Artists of the North East Library (WANEL) Collection and the work of Ethel Guymer, whose work is held in the Middlesbrough Collection. Larkin will discuss her practice and engagement with archives and making work in response to the life and work of others. Guymer was a key member of the Cleveland Art Society for over 30 years holding positions including Treasurer and Secretary. Artworks from the Cleveland Art Society form some of the early works in the Middlesbrough Collection.
This event is free but booking is essential. RSVP via Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hearing-from-artists-fiona-larkin-tickets-399499954117

🔷 Fiona Larkin: Around a tablecloth, An Open Table event
Sat 24 Sept 2022, 14:00 – 16:00, MIMA
In this open table event, artist Fiona Larkin convenes a discussion around artist led groups working locally. Framing the discussion is a tablecloth, a soft structure made by Fiona Larkin to gather around. With special guests and light refreshments made by Gutsy Girl, inspired by Ethel Guymer whose artwork is held in the Middlesbrough Collection and forms a key point of reference for Larkin.

⚡️ OPEN CALL : WRITING COMMISSION! ✍️ ⚡️

Deadline for applications: Thursday 11th August, 17:00 GMT

The Women Artists of the North East (WANE) Library are seeking to commission an artist or writer to develop a new text work that responds to the library collection, histories of women artists in the North East and archive practice.

The WANE Library was founded in 2017 to document, archive and celebrate the legacies and creative practices of women artists in the North East. It is a growing, nomadic project that brings together research and donated material to form a cultural resource.

October 2022 marks the 5th anniversary of establishing the library. Since its beginning, the library has aimed to offer a re-appraisal of artists less visible in current narratives, and to recognise who and what shapes the region’s cultural history and identity.

In 2022 we would like to commission an artist to create a new piece of writing that critically engages with the WANE Library and its collection. The text may take any form and be informed by any artistic practice, but will be written for publication and an event in December 2022, in print and online.

The commissioned artist/writer will be supported with a fee of £1,500 to research and produce a new piece of writing, to be launched as part of our public events programme. They will also receive support accessing the collection and making contact with WANE Library networks, editorial support from the WANE Library team, and design support to create a final publication of the work. There is an additional budget for print, public programme and travel.

Artists who identify as women, transwomen and/or as nonbinary and have a relationship with the North East are eligible to apply for this commission. You do not need to currently live in the North East to apply.

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver the final commissioned writing by end of November 2022.

OPEN LIBRARY & READING GROUP at Tarset Village Hall - Friday 15th July

Between May-August 2022 the Women Artists of the North East Library will be in residence with Visual Arts in Rural Communities (VARC). As part of this we are running monthly Open Library days with a Reading Group at Tarset Village. This is an opportunity to browse the collection, learn more about the project or simply have a cup of tea with us.

The Reading Group will focus on texts by two artists and/or writers in the library collection that explores a connection to art and craft, living rurally, or responding to landscape.

For the second Open Library day and Reading Group on *Friday 15th July* we will be reading extracts from 'Fieldworking' by Laura Harrington and 'The Last Frontier' by Kelly Richardson.

No prior knowledge is needed as printed copies will be available on the day and we will read the texts together. PDFs of the texts are available to download below.

* Open Library 10:00 - 13:30
* Reading Group 11:00 - 12:30

Everyone welcome! We hope to meet local networks and creative practitioners in the area and invite anyone interested in the library or with a creative connection to Northumberland to join us!
