North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team

North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team cover the whole of the Northumbria police force area and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The team is a charity, run entirely by volunteers and reliant upon kind donations from the public to keep us operational. The team is made up of volunteers from all over the region and all come with different skill sets and from different backgrounds. All team members give their time and expertise free of charge. This is not only for training and call-outs, but for more mundane tasks such as vehic

le maintenance, and routine equipment checks. Everyone is also encouraged to get involved in fundraising for the team.

Making the most of the beautiful Northumbrian landscape and lighter evenings earlier this week, the rope team were out practising essential skills. Regular training helps keep skills sharp and teamwork seamless.

On Wednesday last week, Dunmail and Vicky represented the team at Langley Castle for the castle’s 40th anniversary celebrations, marking four decades as a hotel and historic attraction.

We were honoured to be invited in recognition of the support we provide to the local Northumbrian community.

The day included tree planting, bell ringing, Northumbrian entertainment, historic re-enactments in the castle and grounds, and guided tours of the castle - all helping to celebrate the history and heritage of this unique local landmark.

Huge thanks to the winners of last month’s Barrel Race, organised by The Feathers Inn. They took the barrel of beer that they won to Ryton RFC and raised £152 for us!

Thanks also to the members of No 6 Performance who raised the funds, and probably had a great night at the same time!

It’s not all high-altitude heroics; it’s also hours of training, admin and fundraising – and, for some teams, rescues that happen nowhere near a mountain.

Double call out on Saturday. 🚨

It was a busy day for ourselves and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team, with two incidents to respond to.

The first came just after midday, for an injured cyclist in the Kielder area. An ambulance was able to reach the casualty via forestry tracks, where they were assessed on scene. The Great North Air Ambulance Service was requested by Mountain Rescue, but was unavailable, so the casualty was carefully transported to hospital by road in the ambulance. We wish them well in their recovery.

Later on, we were called to Yeavering Bell near Wooler for a walker with a painful leg injury, who couldn’t weight bear.

After assessing the casualty and providing pain relief, a Coastguard helicopter was requested due to the location, however helicopters were already tasked elsewhere.

That meant a stretcher carry, including a steep ground lower using rope systems to get them safely off the hill. Around three and a half hours after the initial call, the casualty was handed over to the ambulance crew.

We hope both casualties are on the mend and back out enjoying the hills again soon.

On Saturday afternoon, we were called out for a walker who had sustained a lower leg injury near Caw Gap on Hadrian’s Wall.

A couple of nearby team members were first on scene, working with a North East Ambulance Service Community Paramedic to assess and treat the injury, including administering pain relief.

The casualty was then carefully transferred onto a mountain rescue stretcher and carried a few hundred metres to the road, where they were handed over to a waiting ambulance for transport to hospital.

We wish them a very speedy recovery and hope they’re back out enjoying the hills again soon.

We’d love to say a big thank you to Katie, who took on our event - the 35th Allendale Challenge last weekend as a runner. 🙌

Katie has walked the challenge before, but was inspired to run it to help raise vital funds for our team! A whopping £1250 was raised. 🙏

Thanks also to Katie’s employer, Savills for contributing to her fundraising effort.

A huge well done Katie, coming third in the women’s field is an awesome result! 🥉

Call Out Round-Up: 14–15 April 2026

1️⃣ White House Folly, near Alnwick

On Tuesday afternoon, we were activated by the North East Ambulance Service for a casualty who had sustained a lower leg injury in a rural location.

With limited initial information, team members were placed on standby while details were clarified. A small team of members local to the incident was deployed and quickly located the casualty. Following treatment by a Mountain Rescue paramedic and an off-duty paramedic, the casualty was transported to meet a waiting ambulance for onward care.

2️⃣ Housesteads

On Wednesday afternoon, we were alerted to a reported fall near Housesteads Roman Fort. A PhoneFind was then sent which confirmed the location within the museum area, and with no need for Mountain Rescue assistance, teams were stood down shortly after mobilising.

An Evening with a Mountaineering Legend – Supporting NNP Mountain Rescue Team!

We’re incredibly excited to share that Simon Yates – one of the world’s most accomplished exploratory mountaineers – is coming to Whitley Bay for a special talk, with proceeds supporting our team.

Best known for his role in Touching the Void, Simon’s story is one of survival, resilience, and extraordinary adventure. But that was just the beginning…

Since that infamous expedition in the Andes, Simon has travelled to some of the most remote and rarely explored mountain ranges on Earth – from the Arctic to the Antarctic, Alaska to Central Asia. His illustrated talk brings these incredible journeys to life with stunning images and film.

“Simon is a totally engaging speaker, who both entertains and inspires.”

This is a unique opportunity to hear first-hand from a true legend of mountaineering – and to support the work of your local mountain rescue team at the same time.

Get your tickets for this amazing event before they’re all gone!
