Foster Care Fortnight: A day in the life of Michelle
As part of Foster Care Fortnight, we’re shining a light on Michelle, a dedicated foster carer balancing life in a busy school, caring for children, and even looking after pets at home. 💛
Her day starts early, helping the children get ready for school and taking them to breakfast club before grabbing a moment of fresh air walking the dog. It’s a simple routine, but one that sets the tone for the day ahead.
After school, it’s all about the little things that matter most whether it’s a trip to the park to burn off energy or a cosy afternoon at home filled with arts, crafts, and quality time, Michelle focuses on being present.
Evenings bring connection, making tea together, slowing things down, and enjoying a bedtime routine full of warmth. From a shared snack to a bedtime story and a “good night, sweet dreams,” these small moments create a sense of comfort and belonging.
Once the children are settled, Michelle continues her role behind the scenes, tidying, completing daily recordings, and preparing for the next day.
One of the highlights? Hearing at parents’ evening that the child in her care has settled well, is happy, and is thriving in school.
Michelle says:
“Even though the days can be busy, there’s a real sense of purpose. The routine provides stability for the children, and that makes it all worthwhile.”
Michelle’s top tip for new foster carers:
Keep a daily diary, it helps you track progress, reflect on moments, and understand patterns. Most importantly, listen, stay calm, and build trust through consistency.
Thank you, Michelle, for everything you do to provide stability, care, and love. 👏
