A recent BBC article questioned the effectiveness of initiatives like Ask for Angela, which has been helping people discreetly exit uncomfortable or unsafe situations for years. An undercover investigation by the BBC found that more than half of participating venues failed to respond properly.

Despite this we think initiatives like Ask for Angela, when implemented safely and correctly, are an essential part of making nights out safer for everyone. When coupled with a programme like Shout-Up! we can be both reactive and proactive - addressing incidents of sexual harassment in the moment and working more longer-term to make spaces safer and change attitudes towards harassment.

In the fast-moving hospitality industry, with large teams and a high turnover of staff, it is difficult to make sure everyone is trained and has the confidence, time and skillset to respond in the right way.

We try to mitigate this with Shout-Up! by giving certified venues long-term support with a dedicated staff member, chances to re-do the training and compulsory annual check-ins to ensure all team members know what Shout-Up! is and what certification means for their venue, and therefore how they need to respond when incidents occur.

The glorious Felt Nowt of Newcastle are now part of the Shout-Up! family.

Felt Nowt is a comedy company and Community Interest Company run by a group of comedians who perform in venues all around Newcastle and beyond.

They've taken our Promoter's Pledge which is a slight variation on the venue certification, but no less significant.

To be part of the group of Shout-Up! certified promoters, everyone at Felt Nowt has:

✅ learned how to identify sexual harassment and intervene safely in a public space or at a gig
✅ demonstrated understanding of how sexual harassment can lead to sexual assault and the impact sexual harassment has on people
✅ worked together to create policies and procedures to make sure they know how to respond should sexual harassment happen on one of their nights.

We're buzzing to count Felt Nowt as one of our Shout-Up! certified promoters alongside:

Marisam Events
Full Force Nrg
Music Sphere
