Streatley Hill is due to close from tomorrow after a collapsed pipe was discovered beneath the road.

The damaged pipe is causing water to flood nearby properties, including The Bull pub, and urgent excavation works are now required to investigate the extent of the problem and carry out repairs.

The closure will be in place 24 hours a day while excavation works are carried out in the carriageway. The road is expected to remain closed for at least a week, although the exact duration will depend on the extent of the damage uncovered.

A signed diversion route is in place via the B4009 to Newbury, along the A4 to the A4/A340 roundabout, and then via the A340/A329 to Streatley. As the diversion will add to journey times, please allow extra time and plan ahead where possible.

We'll share more information, including the expected duration of the closure, as it becomes available.

Don't forget that from today, Newbury town centre will be pedestrianised between 10am and 5pm.

Outside these hours, vehicles will once again be able to access Bartholomew Street, Bridge Street, Mansion House Street, Market Place, Northbrook Street and Wharf Street.

As traffic returns to the town centre in the evenings, please take extra care, stay aware of your surroundings, and look out for other road users when moving around the area.

Newbury town centre pedestrianisation hours are changing.

From Monday (14 September), Newbury town centre will be pedestrianised between 10am and 5pm each day. Outside these hours, vehicles will once again be able to access Bartholomew Street, Bridge Street, Mansion House Street, Market Place, Northbrook Street and Wharf Street.

As traffic returns to the town centre in the evenings, please take extra care, stay aware of your surroundings, and look out for other road users when moving around the area.

We'd like to thank everyone who has shared their views and feedback on the trial to extend the hours over recent months.

Over the last two weeks, our highways teams have repaired 17 potholes, cleaned 369 gullies and fixed 26 street lights across West Berkshire.

While pothole numbers are often lower during the summer months, our teams continue to carry out essential maintenance to keep the network in good condition. Regular gully cleaning helps reduce the risk of flooding, while street lighting repairs help keep roads and footpaths safe for everyone.

Alongside this work, we're continuing to deliver improvements through this year's Highways Improvement Plan.

West Berkshire residents have secured more than £2 million in additional financial support through the Council's Low Income Family Tracker (LIFT) programme.

Since January, targeted campaigns have helped residents access benefits and support they may not have realised they were entitled to, including Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance and Carer's Allowance.

We will also soon launch a new Better Off Calculator to help you check what additional support may be available to you.

We're continuing to invest in infrastructure to encourage and enable walking, wheeling and cycling.

Work has been carried out on the shared pedestrian and cycle route linking residential areas north of Newbury with the town centre.

The works have included:
• Construction of a new footway in Northern Avenue, Donnington
• Tactile paving in the Northern Avenue, Dene Way, Almond Avenue and Chestnut Crescent areas
• New cycle direction signing showing time to destination and bearing the Linkway 6 route branding

Improvements are also being made in the Poplar Place area, with creation of a new footway, and related works planned after Thames Water utility works in Shaw Park have been completed.
