Made locally from food and garden waste collected from West Berkshire homes, it's perfect for improving gardens, flower beds and allotments.

✅ You can recycle plastic pots, tubs and trays, including:

• Yoghurt pots
• Margarine and spread tubs
• Fruit punnets
• Dessert pots
• Sauce and soup pots
• Food trays (excluding black plastic)

Before putting them in your recycling:

💧 Give them a quick rinse to remove food residue and remove any film lids, foil tops and plastic coverings.

♻️ Plastic recycling made simple

Did you know you can recycle:

✅ Yoghurt pots
✅ Margarine & ice cream tubs
✅ Fruit punnets
✅ Plastic food trays
✅ Plastic bottles
✅ Toothpaste tubes

Just give them a quick rinse and remove any topping film before placing them in your green recycling bag.

We're often asked about soft plastics such as crisp packets and bread bags. Although we'd like to collect them, there is currently limited capacity to recycle these materials, so they should still go in your black bin or be taken to a participating supermarket collection point.

🚨 Battery Safety Reminder Following Fire 🚨

A lithium-ion battery from a discarded drill caught fire in the back of one of our waste collection vehicles yesterday while operating in the Crookham Hill area.

Thankfully, due to the quick thinking and response of the crew, the fire was safely extinguished before the fire spread further. Luckily no-one was injured.

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly responsible for fires in waste collection vehicles and recycling facilities. When batteries are put into bins, they can be crushed, punctured, or damaged, causing them to overheat and catch fire.

✅ Never put batteries in your household rubbish or recycling containers.
✅ Take used batteries to a designated battery recycling point.

A few moments spent recycling batteries correctly could prevent a serious incident.

Those delivery boxes don't belong in your black bin.

Cardboard is widely recycled and can be made into new packaging again and again.

Before you put it out for collection:

✅ Remove any packaging materials
✅ Flatten boxes (cardboard must be flattened and no bigger than 85cm x 45cm)
✅ Keep cardboard clean (No grease or food contamination)

Small actions make a big difference.

🚫 Leaving bags, clothes, or other items beside recycling banks is fly-tipping.

If a recycling bank is full, please do not leave items on the ground. Take them home and return later or use an alternative recycling facility.

Fly-tipping is an offence and could result in a fixed penalty notice or prosecution.

🌱 From Garden Waste to Soil Conditioner

Ever wondered what happens to your garden waste after it's collected?

Our garden waste collection service takes place every fortnight, with the material transported to our in-vessel composting facility at Padworth.

Once it arrives, the garden waste is tipped into the reception hall where any obvious contamination, such as flower pots and plastic bags, is removed. It is then shredded together with food waste to break down larger materials and create the ideal mix for composting.

Over the next 10 weeks, using only natural processes, water and heat, the material is transformed into high-quality PAS 100 certified soil conditioner.

This nutrient-rich product can then be used to improve soil structure and support healthy plant growth, helping to complete the recycling loop right here in West Berkshire. ♻️🌿

♻️ Can I recycle wet cardboard?

With the recent spells of rain, we've been asked whether damp or wet paper and cardboard can still be recycled. The good news is - Yes! ✅

As long as it hasn't been contaminated with food, paper and cardboard can still be placed in your recycling.

However, there are a few paper products that we can't recycle at the kerbside:
❌Cardboard boxes bigger than 85cm x 45cm (please take to a recycling centre)
❌ Food-contaminated cardboard (such as greasy pizza boxes)
❌ Shredded paper
❌ Tissue paper, kitchen roll and napkins
❌ Coffee cups and takeaway cups

Why not?
Shredded paper and tissue paper are made up of very small fibres that can snag and cause problems with the sorting equipment back at the recycling facility.

What about coffee cups
Coffee cups and takeaway cups may look like paper, but they contain a plastic lining which cannot currently be recycled through our kerbside recycling service so these need to be placed in the black bin.

By sorting your paper and cardboard correctly, you're helping us recycle more and reduce contamination. Thank you for recycling right! ♻️
