Newbury Town Council was created in April 1997 and in May of that year the people of the town elected twenty-four Councillors. The old Borough Council had been replaced by Newbury District Council in 1974 and, between 1974 and 1997, Charter Trustees looked after the interests of the town

Step back in time and discover the fascinating stories behind Newbury's streets, buildings, pubs, and battlefields with our popular guided Town Walks programme.

Led by local history experts, each walk offers engaging commentary, the chance to ask questions, and a leisurely pace suitable for most visitors.

📍 Walks begin at 10.30am
📍 Starting point: Newbury Corn Exchange (except the Battlefield Walk)
👥 Maximum 15 people per walk

🗓️ 2026 Programme:
• 21 July – A History of Newbury with Philip Wood
• 28 July – Northbrook Street People with Jane Burrell
• 4 August – Lost Pubs of Newbury* with Philip Wood
• 11 August – Newbury at War with Jane Burrell
• 18 August – Northbrook St & Speenhamland with David Peacock
• 25 August – Tudor Newbury with David Peacock
• 1 September – First Battle of Newbury with Dave Stubbs

*Not suitable for children under 12.

Most walks last approximately 2 hours. The First Battle of Newbury walk lasts around 2 hours 30 minutes and starts at The Bowlers Arms, Wash Common.

A wonderful turnout today for the unveiling of Newbury Town Council’s 22nd Blue Plaque, commemorating Elliotts of Newbury, one of the town’s most significant employers from 1875 to 1974.

The plaque, unveiled by the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Jo Day, at Bond House on Strawberry Hill, honours a company whose contribution to both Newbury and the nation was remarkable. From furniture manufacturing to producing ammunition boxes, aircraft components and Horsa gliders during two World Wars, Elliotts played a vital role in our town’s history and the national war effort.

Thank you to everyone who attended the ceremony, to Fortem Property Management Ltd for hosting the plaque, and to the Newbury Society for its continued support of the Blue Plaque scheme.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at the Mayor’s Coffee Morning on Saturday. It was wonderful to see so many people come together in support of a fantastic cause.

The Market Place was buzzing with creativity, innovation and community spirit as visitors supported a fantastic range of young local traders. Special congratulations to Katie Swanson of Katie Daisy Designs, who was named overall winner and will now progress to the next stage of the national Young Traders Market competition.
