11 years ago, Jo Cox was elected as the MP for Batley and Spen.

In her short time in parliament, Jo gained respect across the house and campaigned passionately on a range of local, national and international issues.

Inspired by Jo, in 2016 her family and friends set up The Jo Cox Foundation.

We channel the energy and determination generated by Jo’s life and tragic death into making change on the issues that she was passionate about: we nurture stronger communities, champion respect in politics and advocate for a fairer world.

Under Keir Starmer’s leadership, in less than two years Labour has:
✅ Lifted more children out of poverty than any government in modern history
✅ Renationalised the railways
✅ Moved to fully nationalise British Steel
✅ Expanded free school meals
✅ Introduced breakfast clubs and more childcare
✅ Strengthened workers’ rights more than any government in decades
✅ Seen wages rise faster than they did under the previous decade
✅ Brought NHS waiting lists down
✅ Seen foodbank use start to fall instead of rise
✅ Cut immigration for the first time since Brexit
✅ Kept Britain out of another costly foreign war
✅ Stabilised the economy after years of chaos and decline
That’s not weakness.
That’s not failure.
That’s a Labour government actually using power to improve lives again.
Is there more to do? Of course there is.
People want change faster — and rightly so.
But Britain is finally moving forward again, and I’m proud to support a Prime Minister focused on delivery, not drama ❤️
Some people seem more obsessed with Westminster gossip and leadership plots than the fact Britain is finally moving forward again.

The Labour Government is doing the best job it can to support the interests of all British citizens in a challenging world. Fortunately they have a few years to enact good laws and policies. See our other posts for lists of what's been achieved so far. You might think they could do better, but ask yourself, how realistic is it that anyone would do everything you want and nothing you don't want. "I challenged someone yesterday to tell me why he dislikes Starmer. He couldn't come up with one viable reason.
I told him that the only reason why he doesn't like Starmer is because of what scientist call, The Bandwagon Effect.
The bandwagon effect is when polls highlight a dominant "majority" opinion in results which then influence undecided voters to follow the perceived "wisdom of the crowd" or "jump on the bandwagon" to feel part of a winning team."

According to Full Fact’s Government Tracker, Labour have delivered 20 of the manifesto pledges they made at the 2024 general election. This includes removing the right for hereditary peers to sit in the House of Lords, abolishing non-dom status, creating the publicly owned Great British Energy, scrapping the VAT exemption for private schools and recognising the Palestinian state.
By contrast, if you take a quick glance at the policy page on Reform’s website, you’ll see it’s not quite as long as you might expect. That’s because the party that are aiming to run the country in a few years time have just 19 policies. 19. Even the policies they have decided on have vague titles such as a ‘Make Law-Abiding Citizens Feel Safe’, ‘Make Work Pay’ and ‘Defend British Culture.’

This is the difference between the serious, grown-up politics of the centre, and the opportunistic populism of the extremes.

The difference between politics and populism.

105 Years, 105 Cards (and more) A Call to Newark

There are milestones, and then there are extraordinary legacies.

On the 19th May, Newark resident Eileen reaches an age very few of us will ever see: 105 years old.

Think of the history she holds; 105 years of stories, changes, and resilience right here in our community.

To celebrate this incredible life, let's celebrate with her and help Red Roofs Residential Care Home get Eileen 105 birthday cards—one for every remarkable year, but would it be fantastic for her to receive absolutely loads (the more the merrier)

Let’s join together as a town to make this happen, let's really get being our wonderful community that makes our town special.

Whether you’re a local business, a school class, scout group, other care home, or just a neighbor, please take a moment to send a card and show Eileen that Newark honors its own.

Where to Send Your cards (by the 18th)

Red Roofs Residential Care Home
FAO: Eileen’s 105th Birthday
35a Grange Road, Newark, NG24 4LH

It is a small gesture, perhaps. A piece of card, a stamp, and a handwritten note. But for someone celebrating a birthday that places them in the rarest tier of humanity, these cards represent something much larger.

Please share this call out far and wide. Let’s ensure Eileen feels the warmth of our entire community on her special day.

Jess is the founder of Workright HR. and previously worked in retail, including in an off-licence. Today, she met Keir Starmer to talk about her experiences as a young worker and what the government is doing to improve employment rights for working people across the country. “I worked in retail when I was younger. I saw first-hand the reality of low-level theft and abuse that shop workers often face. Incidents were frequently dismissed as “part of the job,” and when stock or takings didn’t add up, the pressure often fell back on us as employees.
“On one occasion, I was held at knifepoint during a late shift and forced to hand over money from the till. While the police attended, nothing ultimately came of it and there was little to no follow-up support from my employer.
“Sadly, my experience is not unique. My own mum was also a victim of an armed robbery while working in retail many years ago. These situations highlight a long-standing gap in both protection and accountability for frontline workers.
“The recent measures announced to strengthen protections for retail and hospitality workers particularly removing the threshold for crimes like shoplifting to be investigated represent a significant and necessary step forward.
“Alongside this, wider improvements through the Employment Rights Act including stronger rights around sick pay and parental leave are equally important.
“For me, these changes aren’t just policy, they reflect real experiences and real people.
"They represent meaningful progress towards creating safer, fairer workplaces and ensuring that those coming into these roles in the future are better protected, better supported and treated with the respect they deserve.”

This means people aren’t spending more than a tenner on their medicines. Our Labour Government is also helping with the cost of living by freezing rail fares, extending the £3 Bus fare cap, freezing fuel duty, and increasing the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wages and increasing the state pension too.
