Last Friday, three members of the New Quay Coastguard Team joined colleagues from across Area 14 Flood Team for specialist Coastguard Flood training, putting their skills to the test at the Cardiff International White Water Centre.

All Coastguard Rescue Officers are trained and equipped for water rescue, including being first on scene during flooding. But alongside them are specialist flood response coastguards — highly trained officers who can be deployed anywhere in Wales or across the UK when major flooding strikes. 🚨🚔💦

New Quay Coastguard today arranged a multi‑agency missing persons exercise at Ynys Lochtyn, Llangrannog.

The exercise involved the HM Coastguard - Teifi, Area 13 Coastguard Drone Team, Dyfed-Powys Police and both the Inshore and All‑Weather Lifeboats from New Quay Lifeboat station.

A big thank you to Llangrannog Urdd Camp for hosting the exercise, to the local community and to all the emergency services involved. These exercises are critical for testing and improving joint partnership working during emergencies along our beautiful coastline.

Last night our team carried out Water Rescue Training at Llangrannog beach, where our Senior Coastguard Officer put us through our paces with techniques such as immediate rescue and group rescue to help retrieve people in difficulty in the water.

All Coastguard Rescue Officers complete specialist WSAR training to stay competent, confident and safe when operating in or near the water. This prepares us for real world situations including swimmers in difficulty, people cut off by the tide and those trapped during severe weather.

Remember, if you see anyone in difficulty along the coast or at sea, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Today the New Quay Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to assist with a medical evacuation in Treathgwyn, New Quay. On arrival, New Quay RNLI were already providing initial casualty care and NQCRT joined them in delivering further care and undertook the safe stretcher transfer to the new New Quay Lifeboat station while awaiting the ambulance.

With the tide coming in, the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat was requested to help move the casualty to the harbour slipway, where the ambulance later met the team.

Thank you to the RNLI crew, attending doctors and the kind‑hearted members of the public who assisted.

We wish the lady involved a speedy recovery.

New Quay Coastguard were tasked in succession yesterday -

At 15:45, the New Quay Coastguard Rescue Team (NQCRT) was tasked alongside the Coastguard Helicopter, Welsh Ambulance Rapid Response Vehicles and Cardigan RNLI to a medical evacuation at Penbryn Beach.
The Coastguard helicopter arrived on scene quickly and the casualty was airlifted for onward medical care.

At 21:06, the team was tasked again to a casualty evacuation from Llangrannog Beach. Upon arrival, the casualty was already receiving care from Llangrannog RNLI Lifeguards, shortly followed by the Welsh Ambulance Rapid Response Vehicle.
NQCRT rapidly established a helicopter landing site on the beach for the Welsh Air Ambulance and provided ongoing support. The team then assisted with the stretcher transfer of the casualty, who was airlifted for further treatment.

An excellent example of multi‑agency emergency response along the Ceredigion coast.

Remember: If you see someone in difficulty along the coast or at sea, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Taking a dip in the sea on a hot day? ⛱️

Don’t be fooled, just because it’s sunny doesn’t mean the water is warm.

Entering cold water, whether deliberately or accidentally, can cause cold water shock.

When this happens, you may gasp involuntarily, followed by rapid breathing that can be very difficult to control. This can increase the risk of inhaling water and drowning.

Never jump straight in. Instead, enter the water slowly to help your body adjust, and avoid swimming alone. Wearing a wetsuit can also help by improving buoyancy and reducing the effects of cold water.

Don’t forget to have warm clothes ready for when you come back to shore.

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Last night our team carried out a shoreside water‑rescue training exercise. We practised techniques including bankside safety systems and lanyarding to reach persons in difficulty in challenging coastal locations. The session also covered first‑aid response for a drowning casualty recovered from the water.

If we see someone in trouble in the water, our instinct can often be to jump in to try and save them. But entering the water yourself is dangerous, and can put you at risk of drowning too. Instead, if you see someone in trouble, remember Phone, Float, Throw.

Remember call 999 and ask for the Coastguard

The team undertook Rope Rescue Training last night at New Quay headland.

A reminder as we head into brighter weather: cliffs are more unstable than they look, and collapses can happen without warning.

Stay safe by:
• Keeping back from cliff edges
• Following warning signs
• Watching out for strong winds
• Sticking to marked paths
• Wearing suitable footwear
• Carrying water and a charged phone
• Taking extra care in the dark or when it’s slippery
• Never climbing cliffs
• Telling someone your plans

Remember if you see anyone in difficulty at sea or along the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard
