There is an increasing push from the Welsh Government and from the global community via the SDGs (global sustainable development goals) to close the ‘grey divide.’ Rhian Bowen-Davies, the Older People's Commissioner for Wales, came to my university this year and spoke about how one of the biggest problems for older people was the use of the internet. There are a range of reasons for this, including families living in different towns, technological wearable devices, and things being increasingly online, from bus passes to bills; it is a key issue for many.

Neath Town Council is looking to address this. We will be running workshops on specific topics regarding digitization for the elderly. These workshops will include the topics above and many others. There will be a presentation on the topic, a chance for the older people to ask their questions, and then a workshop where they can try out these skills or get advice on other digital issues they may have. We are looking for volunteers to run and assist in these sessions. They will take place in the following locations, on the following dates:

Neath Community Centre, Orchard Street, SA11 1DU - 1st Thursday of every month

Neath Town Hall, 2 Church Pl, Neath SA11 3LL -2nd Thursday of every month

Cimla Community Centre, Afan Valley Close, Neath SA11 3AZ - 3rd Thursday of every month

Melincryddan Community Centre, Crythan Rd, Neath SA11 1TB - 4th Thursday of every month

Social Media Callout For Volunteers

Good afternoon Neath,

My name is Georgina Leafford, I am the Community Engagement Intern at Neath Town Council. I have a number of exciting projects I want to bring to our community but really need your help. I am looking for a street art volunteer to supervise local students on the below project:

In my first few weeks working for the council, there seemed to be a problem with bus stops getting damaged or negatively graffitied. By making our bus stops more vibrant and engaging, I feel we might be able to turn them into something citizens are proud of. The idea is for young people of Neath, ages 14-18 to create street art for these stops to make them more eye-catching and, potentially, even something that people can learn something about Neath/Welsh history and culture from.

If bus stops become something more interesting to take a selfie in front of for social media than to smash, I feel we could curb this problem. So Neath Town Council invite local secondary schools, youth groups and colleges to design positive graffiti murals for our bus stops. These murals should depict one of the following:

· Natural Neath – A mural of a beautiful part of Neath
· Historical Neath/Wales – An image about the history of Neath or Wales, see the example of the miners below. Or a famous person local to the area
· ‘My Neath’ – What does Neath mean to them? Is their family sitting outside Neath Castle eating? Is it them and their friends walking through the town? A Welsh rugby match?

What we need, however, is some adult spray painters to get involved and supervise the winning students when they spray their art on the stops. All materials will be provided. If you want to get involved, please contact us on: 01639 642126
