🎉 Celebrating over 66 years of dedication in Nairn! 🚒🚒

Last night, Watch Commander Gordie McLane proudly recognised two of our long-serving crew members:

👏 Crew Commander Alan Davidson, who joined in January 1991
👏 Firefighter Peter Grant, who joined in April 1993

Together, they’ve dedicated an outstanding 66 years and 4 months to serving Nairn and the surrounding communities!

Alan and Peter originally joined the Highlands and Islands Fire Brigade, which then became the Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service in 2005, and later merged into the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in 2013. A journey that reflects their personal commitment to being on-call firefighters and protecting their communities tirelessly.

Behind every on-call firefighter is a network of support. Families who’ve endured missed meals, disrupted sleep, and countless moments of uncertainty, and employers who’ve shown incredible flexibility and understanding. We extend our deepest thanks to those who have provided their support to make their service possible throughout the years.

🙏 Please join us in thanking Alan and Peter for everything they’ve done, and continue to do, to keep our communities safe.

Both were presented with official 30-year service certificates and clasps last night. Their loyalty, courage, and service continue to inspire us all. Here’s to many more years working together! 💛🔥

A huge thank you to everyone who came and spoke with us at the show today!
We had a conveyor belt of kids coming to check out the appliance, so this was the only photo we managed to snap!
We even had a call-out in the middle of it all, never a dull moment!

Thank you as well for all the generous donations, every penny is going to The Fire Fighters Charity. Your support means a lot!

🎉 Huge congratulations to Vicky Main, Firefighter Ewan Main, and Super Sibling Rory on the arrival of baby Orla! 💕🚒

Hopefully, Vicky can now chill, and let Ewan trade his fire gear to be a nappy ninja instead. Rory’s got a new teammate too (and future toy thief). 😄

Wishing you all love, laughter, and just enough sleep to function. Welcome to the world, Orla, you’ve joined an awesome crew! 💖

Firefighter Peter “Pooch” Grant, aka Perfect Pete

Another camera-shy firefighter, don’t be fooled by the photo! He’s not waving… that’s just him almost managing to cover his face before the camera clicked. Blink and you’ll miss him (especially if there’s a camera around)!! 😁

Known to the crew as Pooch, and more famously as Perfect Pete, he’s a man who doesn’t do things by halves, or quarters. Pete insists on doing it to military standards. His locker? Immaculate. His toolkit? Organised with surgical precision. His moaning? Also… quite consistent.

Pete’s mechanical background is worth its weight in gold, especially when the tools come out at an RTC. He knows every bit of kit like the back of his hand, and he’s not shy about telling you when you’re using it wrong either. Years of experience, countless call-outs, and a sixth sense for hydraulics make him the crew’s very own mechanical magician. In saying that, he will wait for CC Davidson to have a go first! 😂

Fitness-wise, Pooch is annoyingly capable. He’s the type that finishes a job, takes a deep breath, and still has enough in the tank to carry the rest of us back to the station. Long incidents? He eats them for breakfast.

Of course, we can’t forget the moaning. Pete can find something to grumble about in even the most peaceful moments. At one point we were sure a wee dark cloud was following him around… and honestly, we’re not entirely convinced it’s gone! 😬

But behind the mock complaints and high standards is one of the most dependable firefighters you could ask for. Sharp, skilled, and solid as a rock. Pete is the guy you want beside you when things get tough.

Here’s a wee laugh for you, Ryan channeling his inner Gladiator and giving the iconic scene a go… with a fire service twist!

“My name is Crew Commander Millar, commander of cowboys, guardian of the half-made brews, loyal servant to Nairn’s 07 plate Scanias. Owner of a semi-broken pager, veteran of the wildfire incident of ’25.Husband to an extremely unimpressed wife, who’s still raging I missed her birthday for a false alarm at the local hospital. And I will have my vengeance, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but definitely after this down pour of rain.” 😂😂

🔥 Firefighter James Kellas 🔥

Where do we start, we've been given free reign (within reason) to profile our station social media admin assassin, our versatile vocabulary vigilante, our passionate paragraph producing patriot. How do we do this justice...

Since deciding to join the service in 2014, James has thrown everything at it, what he lacked in height... ( sorry mate ) he made up with a big personality and a caring attitude who quickly became a vital cog in the machine that is Nairn retained 🔥

This can do attitude has come into play a number times over the years, from rescuing teenagers trapped in kids swings... to actually rescuing a cat from a tree ( the only one in the last 10 years) 🐈

However, it has been know on a number occasions that due to James being slightly less tall than some of the rest of us, he has volunteered (been forced) to gain entry to properties when required, albeit through any opening you could imagine 🏠

A memorable occasion of this was when we had a call out to break in due to concerns for a person within the premises. As he climbed the ladder to go through an opened window, a woman burst through the curtains saying “you are at the wrong window cill” you could imagine the fright he got at 3am at the top of 10.5 metre ladder 😂 🪜

On another occasion, James may of had a small chimney fire at his own house, now instead of having the utter shame of Nairn Retained screaming up to his house with blues and twos, which to be honest we would of, he decided to act out a scene reminiscent of Johnny English and creep along his roof with a garden hose! All while trying so desperately not to be spotted by his loving neighbour, crew commander Alan Davidson who would of had both Nairn pumps there, an aerial platform and anything else he could get to turn up!

Above all, James is dependable, honest and one of the last ones off the fire ground. Always taking the opportunity to instill a little snippet of knowledge into our new recruits with a cheery smile and bit of cheek thrown in. James also served as crew commander for a number of years and has recently passed his Class C driving test to allow him to drive our appliances!

Another part of the Nairn family, thanks for the laughs, the cheek, the knowledge and being an all round helpful guy. 🔥🔥
