I am very pleased to see that a permanent camera has now been installed at Shawhead junction, following the initial deployment of a mobile camera.

This is a welcome investment in our local community that I was pleased to work with my colleague Cllr Geraldine Woods - Coatbridge South and community partnership officers to bring forward.

We are pleased to see that a camera has been installed at Shawhead junction by North Lanarkshire Council.

Following concerns raised by constituents in the surrounding areas, we worked together to request this CCTV project was considered in the Council’s Local Development Programme.

It is our hope that the camera will provide a record of any incidents that may occur nearby.

We would like to thank officers in the Community Partnership team for their efforts in bringing this project to fruition.

LOCK UP DEMOLITION

Following approval at last month’s meeting of the Housing Committee, six lockup garages on Dunottar Avenue in Shawhead will be demolished.

The garages suffered substantial storm damage, meaning that it would not be economically viable to rebuild.

Demolition will make additional parking spaces available for residents.

WHIFFLET CROSS LIGHTS UPDATE

A new temporary traffic lights system has been installed at Whifflet Cross. The lane closures have been temporarily removed southbound on Whifflet Street and westbound on Calder Street as part of the adjustment process.

As traffic flow is being managed without abnormal congestion in the area, Caldeen Road will close again on Wednesday, effective from 9.30am, to allow the planned puffin crossing refurbishment works to resume.

WHIFFLET TRAFFIC LIGHTS FAILURE

SPEN are still on site carrying out repairs, following the power failure which struck the traffic lights at Whifflet Cross last night.

There has been extensive damage to underground cabling and ducting as a result of the power failure. This means that the temporary traffic lights installed by SPEN this morning remain in place. While this is not ideal for managing traffic flow, this is considered the current best option to maximise safety at the junction.

Other traffic management options are being actively explored, as the repairs to the traffic lights have the potential to go on for a considerable length of time due to the scale of the works required.

Caldeen Road will remain open in the meantime.

More positive action following the walkabout in Whifflet this week!

A725 Whifflet Street/B753 Calder Street/School Street - Expect delays due to traffic signalling fault

Following a power outage by SP Energy Networks, traffic lights have been affected at Whifflet Cross. Works at Caldeen Road are also impacting on the outage. Temporary traffic signals have been installed but please expect delays to travel. Follow alternative routes where possible.
