I’ve just watched the BBC news and seen the disgraceful scenes. A family fleeing for their lives as their home was set on fire.
This wasn’t a family who had just arrived. They had lived there for more than 20 years, contributing to their community, working hard and building a life for themselves.
Why was their family home targeted? Believed to be because of the colour of their skin as reported on the BBC.
I genuinely struggle to find the words. No family should ever have to experience that fear, and no child should have to watch their home burn because of hatred and prejudice.
The really sad thing is that this is exactly what some people want. They thrive on division, fear and unrest. They want neighbour turned against neighbour, community against community, and they want the chaos that follows.
When crimes have been committed, let the police do their jobs. Let investigations take place. Let the courts decide guilt and let justice take its course. Those responsible for criminal acts should face the full consequences of the law. If someone is a foreign national and convicted then deportation should be followed. That’s how a civilised society works, not this violence that achieves absolutely nothing.
What must never happen is innocent people being targeted, threatened or attacked because of the colour of their skin, where they were born, or because they happen to belong to a particular community. Collective blame is wrong, and mob justice is no justice at all.
We should also be wary of those seeking to inflame tensions from afar whether through social media, misinformation or political rhetoric. Too often, people with no stake in our communities or country encourage anger and division while others are left to deal with the consequences.
The vast majority of people, regardless of their background, simply want to live peacefully, raise their families, go to work and contribute to society. Yet they are the ones who suffer when hatred is stirred up for political gain, clicks on social media, or personal agendas.
Those politicians, commentators and public figures who encourage division, fuel hostility or turn a blind eye to racism or any form of discrimination should hang their heads in shame. Words have consequences, and when hatred is normalised, innocent people pay the price.
We cannot allow those who spread fear and division to define who we are. The answer to hatred can never be more hatred. It must be unity, decency and standing together against violence wherever it appears.
As a world we are better than this. We must be better than this. ❤️
