🏠 Most people agree Northumberland needs more homes. Most people also know we're facing a housing crisis.
The question isn't whether we build housing – it's whether we're building the right homes, in the right places, for local people. Too many families are struggling to find affordable housing while waiting lists remain high.
We need honesty about the challenge and ambition to deliver homes that meet the needs of Northumbrians. 💛❤️💛❤️

I’ve just watched the BBC news and seen the disgraceful scenes. A family fleeing for their lives as their home was set on fire.

This wasn’t a family who had just arrived. They had lived there for more than 20 years, contributing to their community, working hard and building a life for themselves.

Why was their family home targeted? Believed to be because of the colour of their skin as reported on the BBC.

I genuinely struggle to find the words. No family should ever have to experience that fear, and no child should have to watch their home burn because of hatred and prejudice.

The really sad thing is that this is exactly what some people want. They thrive on division, fear and unrest. They want neighbour turned against neighbour, community against community, and they want the chaos that follows.

When crimes have been committed, let the police do their jobs. Let investigations take place. Let the courts decide guilt and let justice take its course. Those responsible for criminal acts should face the full consequences of the law. If someone is a foreign national and convicted then deportation should be followed. That’s how a civilised society works, not this violence that achieves absolutely nothing.

What must never happen is innocent people being targeted, threatened or attacked because of the colour of their skin, where they were born, or because they happen to belong to a particular community. Collective blame is wrong, and mob justice is no justice at all.

We should also be wary of those seeking to inflame tensions from afar whether through social media, misinformation or political rhetoric. Too often, people with no stake in our communities or country encourage anger and division while others are left to deal with the consequences.

The vast majority of people, regardless of their background, simply want to live peacefully, raise their families, go to work and contribute to society. Yet they are the ones who suffer when hatred is stirred up for political gain, clicks on social media, or personal agendas.

Those politicians, commentators and public figures who encourage division, fuel hostility or turn a blind eye to racism or any form of discrimination should hang their heads in shame. Words have consequences, and when hatred is normalised, innocent people pay the price.

We cannot allow those who spread fear and division to define who we are. The answer to hatred can never be more hatred. It must be unity, decency and standing together against violence wherever it appears.

As a world we are better than this. We must be better than this. ❤️

⛏️ SAVE THE DATE – NORTHUMBERLAND MINERS' PICNIC 2026 ⛏️

One of Northumberland's most treasured traditions returns on Saturday 13th June 2026 at the wonderful Woodhorn Museum.

Beginning with the annual Miners' Memorial Service at 10:30am, the day will honour those who worked in our coal mining communities and remember those who lost their lives in the industry.

The Miners' Picnic is a celebration of our proud heritage, community spirit and the generations who helped shape Northumberland. Throughout the day there will be brass bands, live music, exhibitions, heritage displays, family activities, workshops, talks, local food and much more.

Whether you have a family connection to the pits or simply want to celebrate our region's history, it's always a fantastic day out for all ages.

📅 Saturday 13th June 2026
📍 Woodhorn Museum, Ashington
⏰ Memorial Service starts at 10:30am

Please save the date and support this important community event.

‼️12 years ago today – who can believe it?‼️

I was proud to announce and support the rebuilding of Berwick Hospital. Like many major projects, it has seen its fair share of twists, turns and delays along the way, but it is still set to be a fantastic facility for local people.

Watching this old BBC Look North clip back, I can’t help but think how young I look. Then again, I suppose that’s because I was!

It’s been a long journey, but seeing projects like this progress reminds me why public service matters – standing up for our communities and helping deliver improvements that will benefit people for generations to come.

📺 Looking back at where it all started… and feeling just a little bit older today! 😄🏥

💙 Diabetes Week 2026 | Strike Out Stigma 💙

This Diabetes Week, I'm supporting the campaign to Strike Out Stigma and help change the way we talk about diabetes.

Too many people living with diabetes face judgement, blame and misunderstanding. In fact, 8 out of 10 people with diabetes say they have experienced negative attitudes because of their condition.

Nobody chooses diabetes. It isn't anyone's fault. By being more understanding, challenging misconceptions and supporting those affected, we can help create a world where diabetes does no harm.

Let's work together to tackle stigma, promote kindness and raise awareness.

Carers Week 2026 | 8th – 14th June 💙

This Carers Week, I want to take a moment to say thank you to all the unpaid carers across our communities.

Whether you're caring for a family member, friend, neighbour or loved one, your dedication, compassion and support make an incredible difference every single day. Caring can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging, and too often carers put the needs of others before their own.

This week is an opportunity to recognise the vital role carers play, celebrate everything they do, and remind them that their contribution is valued and appreciated.

To every carer across Northumberland – thank you for all that you do. Scott

🌱 Weeds, w**ds, w**ds… they’re certainly causing a lot of discussion at the moment!

I’ve met with those responsible for tackling w**ds, both at Northumberland County Council and social housing providers such as Karbon Homes. I’ve been advised that spraying has taken place in many areas and that w**d die-off is expected shortly, after which removal works can begin.

As many of you know, this is the time of year when I receive lots of messages about grass cutting and w**ds. I completely understand the frustration, but it’s important that we remember a few facts and remain courteous.

I didn’t plant the w**ds, and I don’t want to see them any more than you do. However, dealing with them isn’t always as straightforward as it appears. There are different landowners, different responsibilities, and different processes that have to be followed. Private housing providers such as Karbon Homes are separate organisations and are not controlled by the County Council, but I continue to meet with them, undertake walkabouts, raise concerns and push for action where it is needed.

Some residents still understandably think many of the houses in our area are council-owned, but they were transferred to housing associations around 20 years ago, meaning maintenance responsibilities often sit elsewhere.

Please bear with us. I’m continuing to chase everyone involved and do everything I can to ensure each organisation carries out its responsibilities.

There’s no doubt w**ds seem worse this year. I’m told the combination of warm temperatures, sunshine and regular rainfall has created almost perfect growing conditions, meaning w**ds are growing faster, stronger and in greater numbers than we would normally expect. Combined with fewer grass cuts in some locations and the lack of communication around initiatives such as No Mow May, it has understandably become much more noticeable to residents.

Thank you to everyone who continues to report issues respectfully. Please keep reporting on Fix My Street online.

Together we’ll keep pushing for improvements across our communities. 💪❤️
