Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve and Visitor Centre

Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve and Visitor Centre A Scottish Wildlife Trust owned Local Nature Reserve. Situated in the North of Angus, Montrose Basin is of international importance for migrating birds.

Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve is an enclosed tidal estuary of the river South Esk, covering 750 Hectares on the edge of the Angus town of Montrose. The Reserve provides the ideal habitat for over 200 different species of birds throughout the year. In autumn and winter we are visited by over 80,000 Pink Footed Geese as they make their annual migration south from Iceland and Greenland. In addition

the reserve hosts a great variety of ducks and wading species including Eider, Wigeon, Pintail, Oystercatchers, Lapwing and Greenshanks. Spring and summer sees the return of our breeding species from Africa and Europe. On a daily basis Ospreys can be seen fishing at low tide, Sand Martins can be watched flying in and out of our nesting wall and Swallows fly to and from their nests in the eaves of the Visitor Centre. Our specially constructed tern raft, providing nesting space for up to 100 Common Terns, can also be viewed from the centre. Our 4* rated Visitor Centre is the ideal place to take in the spectacular views across the reserve and try to spot many of our iconic bird species. The centre includes telescopes, binoculars and live camera streams to help you explore the Basin, interpretation and interactive panels to help you learn more about the reserve and an activity area to help keep the children entertained. You can also enjoy a hot drink and snack from our café or browse the range of wildlife gifts available in our shop. There are also walks and bird hides situated around the reserve, giving you the ideal opportunity to explore and get closer to the wildlife. Details of the walks can be found on our reserve leaflet, or just drop into the centre to speak to a member of staff. The Visitor Centre and Ranger teams run a variety of events throughout the year, aimed at children, adults and families. These events include early morning walks to see the spectacle of up to 80,000 Pink Footed Geese, fun days where the whole family can take part in a range of craft activities and ranger led practical volunteer days allowing you to get stuck in and find out about the jobs we do to maintain the reserve. Full details of our upcoming events can be found here; http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/visit/visitor-centres/montrose-basin/

Montrose Basin's prep is now well underway! We've now handed out over 1000 paper geese to the local primary schools to be coloured in (any colours are fine as long as their feet are pink). 🪿🩷

By 1st October, you'll be seeing lots of skeins of these geese hanging up along the High Street and in the visitor centre. 🥰

Thank you very much to Three Point Studio for printing out 1200 geese for us - not an easy ask! And to Scottish Wildlife Trust Young Leader Ellen Forbes for their wonderful artwork.

Any guesses for when the pink-footed geese will start arriving this year?

We're at that time of year when each day gradually feels just a bit more autumnal. The pink-footed geese could easily arrive any day now, all depending on the weather and wind direction. We saw our first arrivals on this day in 2020, but last year we didn't see our first until the 14th!

We're very excited to announce the return of Scottish Wildlife Trust's this year, 1-11 October! 🪿🎉

After last year's success with all our pink-footed goose themed celebrations, we're back this October with even more ways to experience the spectacle of the tens of thousands of geese that Montrose Basin is internationally important for.

The local primary school children will also be helping fill the visitor centre, the High Street, and Murray Street with hundreds of skeins of beautifully coloured pink-footed geese. 🪿🪿🪿

And we're so pleased that the town of Montrose, and beyond, is getting involved too! 🚨 Goose FYI post! 🚨

It's that time of year again! Canada geese and greylag geese are gathering in their hundreds at Montrose Basin, and people are wondering why we're hearing geese so early. But worry not - the tens of thousands of pink-footed geese are still up in their breeding grounds in Iceland/Greenland! 🪿

There are currently well over 1000 Canada geese and several hundred greylag geese using the Basin as their roosting site following their moult migration. These are UK resident birds, and they move around the country after breeding season. The numbers always pick up in August, but in mid-September when the pink-footed geese arrive, the UK resident geese tend to move on.

Autumn will really feel like it's arrived when the pink-footed geese do come back to Scotland, and they have a very noticeably different call to the Canadas and greylags. Instead of making the 'stereotypical' "honk-honk" call, pinkies make a higher pitched "wink-wink" call.

🦌 Along with the otters swimming along the shore in front of the Visitor Centre, we are having semi-regular appearances from some Roe Deer, spotted here finding some food near the kingfisher pond.

A mother and her young could be seen looking around for whoever was making so much noise (think it might have been us chatting)! Young Fawns will stay with their mother for up to a year, learning how to forage and survive alone! 🐾

Have you been lucky enough to spot an otter in Scotland? 🦦

We've been so pleased to have been able to see otters at Montrose Basin multiple times over the last fortnight, and our member and talented photographer Ron Mitchell had the unforgettable experience of seeing this family of otters from the Kingfisher Hide last week!

The mum and two pups were catching crabs in the salt pans, before heading off for a snooze in the reedbeds.

☀ On a relatively quiet but sunny day at the Basin, a young bullfinch visited us, looking a bit unsure of the world, trying to eat some berries on the honeysuckle bushes outside the centre.

Bullfinches were actually considered a pest back in the 1500s, so much so Henry VIII created an Act in Parliament that one penny would be give out for every bird killed, for their "Criminal Acts" on fruit trees!

Times have thankfully changed, now we are delighted when these birds visit our gardens, looking out for the bright rose-red chest, white rump and black capped males or greyish-brown females. 😊
