2288 Montrose Squadron Air Training Corps 2288 (Montrose) Squadron Air Training Corps is a unit within the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, a volunteer youth organisation sponsored by the Royal Air Force.

It is open to all young people aged 12-17. Are you up for fun, adventure, incredible experiences and making new friends? Are you looking for something to give you the edge in life? Then welcome to the Air Cadet Organisation (ACO). Better known as the 'Air Cadets', we’re a UK-wide cadet force with more than 40,000 members aged between 12 and 20 years. We're sponsored by the Royal Air Force and can give you hands-on experience of activities and courses that will challenge and develop your skills to help you succeed in whatever you want to do. 🌟 Introducing our new RAFAC Warrant Officer: WO Alex Corbin 🌟

We are delighted to announce the appointment of WO Alex Corbin as the new Warrant Officer for the RAF Air Cadets!

Alex brings over two decades of experience to the role, having started his journey in 2002 as a cadet at 171 (Christchurch) Squadron. Over the years, he has served across both Dorset & Wiltshire Wing and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wing as a Civilian Instructor, Squadron SNCO, Sector SNCO, and Wing Warrant Officer.

Holding a Level 7 qualification in Leadership & Management through CVC, Alex brings both deep cadet/CFAV experience and extensive corporate leadership expertise from his career in global software consulting. He is passionate about ensuring the Cadets' and CFAVs' voices are heard at the highest level while championing simplicity, pragmatic policies, and strong support for our volunteers.

Outside of uniform, Alex lives in the New Forest with his partner Isabelle and their Labrador puppy.

We’d like to thank the outgoing RAF Air Cadets Warrant Officer, WO Donna Hall, for her time in the post and her absolute dedication to the organisation.

On the 5th of September, FS Baynton, Sgt Fisher and Cpl Hogg attended the International Ayr Show with Central Scotland Wing, there were many activities to do and many companies had stalls displaying there work in many things like Aeronautical Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance and many more. Followed by a very entertaining display of Jets, Helicopters, Wing Walkers and Parachuting Display Team. Then came the main event, The Typhoon and the Red Arrows. What a brilliant event!

On the 10th of July through to the 17th Sergeant Summers attended the Little Rissington RIAT replacement camp. He was given a wide range of opportunities on the camp despite its speedy creation. He very much enjoyed the Chinook flight and gliding. The staff were all enthusiastic and approachable which added to the experience. The program was full of interesting activities and all the cadets and staff embraced the new and different approach. Despite it not being RIAT, he says it was a highlight of his cadet career so far. Sergeant Summers was also honoured to meet our very own Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Lewis and got a nice photo and very funny video!

It’s been a while since you have heard from us, so here is a recap of what has happened over the last few months!

NEW OC ALERT!!
On the 1st of July, our very own Flight Sergeant Richie Brown took over command at 2288 (Montrose). Flight Lieutenant Matt Smith has taken up his new role in the wing, becoming Sector Commander for sector 1 after being the OC for over 10 years. From everyone at 2288, we wish Matt all the best in his future endeavours in the corps, but as we say goodbye to the old, we welcome in the new. Here is to a new generation of 2288, "The FS Brown Era."

On the topic of coming in with the new, we welcomed in FS Adam Baynton. Transferred in from 38F (Perth), the FS has served almost 4 years in the corps and comes in with a plethora of qualifications, including DTC(I), MOI, Silver First Aid and Leadership, and many more. We wish Adam all the best in his 2288 journey.

Squadron Visits!
2288 did a PR and recruitment drive at Borrowfields. All cadets who attended had a blast, and it was an overall great day out. Our own FS Aidan Sim, whilst fulfilling his Lord-Lieutenant duties, assisted the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward. Showing him around Montrose. Going to the Montrose Port Authority, Community Trust, and many more. FS Sim was there with the Lord-Lieutenant, making sure he didn’t get lost in the amazing place we call Montrose. Also, over the last few months, we have been on many Multi-Activity Camps where our cadets went to expand their knowledge at wing level and walk away with…
A few badges. Finally, to round up our recap post, 2288 visited the RLNI to see what they do and how they help our community. Cadets had an absolute blast, and we hope to return to see them again.

As we come to the end of we say an incredible thanks to our hard working adult volunteers who lead and manage the squadron providing training in line with the RAF Air Cadets syllabus. Without them we would not be able to deliver opportunities for our young people.

2288 (Montrose) Squadron has a mix of commissioned and non commissioned officers (who are uniformed), civilian instructors and our Civilian Committee Members (who support with welfare and finance).

Last weekend Cpl Fisher and enjoyed a weekend of Adventure Training at the Central Scotland Wing RAF Air Cadets Adventure Training Weekend supported by our own CI Davidson who was supporting the walking element. Concurrently running was a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Expedition which Cdt’s Gibson and Hogg participated in, well done to both of them for completing successfully.

Elsewhere Flt Lt Smith attended a Blue Level RPAS (Drone Flying) Instructor Course, allowing for this training to be rolled out to our Cadets.
