Come and bash balsam on Thursday 18th June!

We will be in Brockweir tackling Himalayan balsam, a highly invasive non-native species that spreads rapidly along riverbanks and crowds out our native plants. Join us for just the morning or stay all day. (Warning - balsam bashing can be addictive!) There will be tea and cake and the feel good factor of doing something practical to help the Wye and her tributaries.

📍 Mackenzie Hall, Brockweir
🕙 9:45am to 2.30pm approx.
🫖and 🍰provided to fuel the bashers!

🌿🐝🥀Calling all budding young field biologists! 🌿🪲🐞

For our next Young Adventurers outing on 20th June we have teamed up with Gwent Wildlife Trust for a visit to Pentwyn Farm Nature Reserve.

At this time of year the wildflower meadows on the reserve are full of flowers and buzzing with bees, making it the ideal time to find out if you know your Snake’s-head fritillary from your Crested Dog's-tail or your Long-horned bee from your Cuckoo bumblebee.

This activity is for ages 11-16yrs.

Now that we have captured your attention with this very cute furry friend out on a walk with Ross Walkers are Welcome, could you help this amazing group with their social media activities?

They are looking for a volunteer/s to create and share content about the walks they lead and the work they do to make walking in and around Ross-on-Wye such a fantastic experience.

They run the much-loved Ross Walking Festival held in September, which brings in people from around the UK and overseas. Since becoming a Walkers are Welcome town 17 years ago they have worked tirelessly to improve the walking experience locally. One of their priorities has been the creation of stile free walks, and they have managed to remove or replace 100s of stiles with gates, making footpaths accessible to many people (and their dogs) who cannot negotiate stiles.

They also work with local businesses, tourism and leisure organisations, local attractions and parish councils to ensure footpaths and facilities for walkers are signposted, maintained and improved.

If you would like to volunteer please contact [email protected]

Don't miss out! Last chance to see 'Flow/Liff – The River Wye from Source to Sea' exhibition at Chepstow Museum, open today between 11am and 4pm.

There is a lovely backstory to 'Flow / Llif'. Last year, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wye Valley Walk, we led a linear ramble along the 138 miles of this much loved long distance path. Over 100 people joined us, some dipping in an out of the 13 day walks, some completing the whole trail. Among them were artist Lucy Burden and amateur filmmaker Steve Bennett, and the rest, as they say, is history!

The Museum also has an amazing collection of paintings and prints of the Wye Valley, from the days of the Picturesque movement and The Wye Tour.

'Flow / Llif' runs until June 9th at Chepstow Museum and will then transfer to The Pavilion in Hereford - 14th to 24th June.

🐝Become a Wye Valley Buzzwatch volunteer🐝

Would you like to be able to identify bumblebees, like this Brown-banded carder bee? We are inviting volunteers to become part of the Wye Valley Buzzwatch volunteer group, run by the National Landscape team, to help gather data about bumblebee populations throughout the Wye Valley National Landscape.

We are holding a Bumblebee Identification Training Workshop, delivered by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, on Saturday, July 18. This full-day session will introduce participants to bumblebee ecology, identification, and survey techniques, including a BeeWalk demonstration, along Offa's D**e Footpath.

🐝 BeeWalk is a national citizen science recording scheme run by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to collect data to monitor the abundance of bumblebees . This data collection would be impossible without volunteer BeeWalkers, who identify and count the bumblebees they see on a monthly walk (a fixed route of around 1 to 2 km - you choose where it goes) from March to October.

We will provide everything newly trained Buzzwatch volunteers need to contribute to local monitoring.

🐝 Spaces are limited—book now to secure your spot: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1990860865441?aff=oddtdtcreator

🌍 World Environment Day 🌿

Today, on World Environment Day, we’re celebrating the incredible landscapes, wildlife and communities that make the Wye Valley National Landscape so special. 💚

From ancient woodlands and flower-rich meadows to winding rivers and internationally important habitats, the Wye Valley is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife and natural beauty — and there’s never been a better time to get outside and explore it.

Whether you enjoy walking, cycling, wildlife spotting, photography, paddling on the river, or simply taking in the scenery, connecting with nature benefits both people and the environment. 🌳🦋🌊

At the Wye Valley National Landscape, we work with local communities, landowners, volunteers, schools, farmers and partner organisations to help protect and enhance this special place for future generations.

Small actions can make a big difference, and by working together we can help nature thrive across the Wye Valley and beyond.

So today, why not take a moment to step outside, explore your local environment, and appreciate the natural world around you? 🌼

During Volunteers' Week we would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers who help us conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Wye Valley National Landscape. Over the last 12 months they have clocked up a staggering 3082 hours of work!

🌿Conservation volunteers have been busy bashing balsam and restoring dry stone walls, planting trees and hedgerows, and getting thoroughly wet and muddy at our annual bog working party.

Alongside the conservation team, volunteers provide vital support for other projects including:

🦔Saving hedgehogs at the Prickly Patch Hedgehog Rehabilitation Centre

🐮Checking conservation grazing cattle at Beacon Hill, Cleddon Bog and Staunton Meend

🔭Helping Young Adventurers learn new skills

🚶‍♀️Removing stiles to make footpaths accessible

🐦‍⬛Counting nightjars to improve knowledge about these mysterious birds

👣'Back-marking' on our guided walks to ensure we don't loose anyone!

It's an amazing contribution and we want to say a big 'THANK YOU'!

Fancy joining us? Why not come along to our next outing on June 18th when we will be bashing Balsam in Brockweir? Or if you fancy dry stone walling we will be in Staunton on 16th July.

At the start of we would like to introduce our youngest Wye Valley National Landscape volunteer, 15 year old Finn Whately. Finn has joined our new Nightjar monitoring project, which aims to find out more about the mysterious Nightjars that migrate each Spring from sub-Saharan Africa to nest in the Wye Valley National Landscape.

Over to Finn...

I've been doing Bird Ringing training for a few years with Steph Tyler, and I've done quite a bit of photography. The Wye Valley is amazing for birdlife and wildlife so volunteering for me is about learning new things, but also being part of something positive. These photos show me out with the Gwent Ornithological Society learning to ring a Tawny Owl and her chicks. I've been going up to hear the nightjars with my family for years now, and its a real privilege to be part of the monitoring team. I got a photo of one churring from a branch last night - sorry its a bit of a grainy image! With so much bad news around biodiversity its great to be part of such a good news story.

A big 'Thank You' to Finn for the amazing nightjar photo and to Ben Locke & Hugh Manistre for sharing their expertise with our volunteers.
