Shire Hall Monmouth

Shire Hall Monmouth Shire Hall Museum is a Grade I listed building located in the centre of Monmouth. The Shire Hall is located in the centre of Monmouth, Wales.

The Shire Hall Museum will close to the public on 20th December 2025 and will be closed throughout 2026 to reopen early in 2027 as we undergo an exciting refurbishment. It is a Grade I listed, classically designed building designed by Philip Fisher of Bristol in 1724, Shire Hall was the scene of one of the most significant trials in British history when, in 1839/40, John Frost and other Chartists

were tried for their involvement in the Chartist Riots in Newport. In 2011 the entire Shire Hall building was sympathetically refurbished to its original state. An important part of the project has been the installation of a lift to allow everyone unrestricted access to all of the building; it is open 7 days a week to the public offering self-guided tours of our fully interactive Courtroom, Holding Cells and Judges Chamber; our elegant yet timeless architectural rooms are also available for private hire! Please contact the Shire Hall for more details. The Shire Hall offers bespoke wedding packages tailored to fit your individual needs, no matter how eccentric Shire Hall staff will aim to fulfil your every wish; have a look at our photo album for previous Shire Hall weddings or get in contact with one of our helpful members of staff! Here at the Shire Hall we aspire to promote local businesses and producers by any means possible, we are lucky to have Monmouth Town Markets gather on our cobbles every Saturday from 9-4pm, please join us in supporting local producers and organisations by coming down for a look!

✨Wrth i ni nodi Mis Hanes Menywod a dathlu Diwrnod Rhyngwladol y Menywod heddiw, rydym yn taflu goleuni ar y Fonesig Eleanor Shelley Rolls. Menyw a dreuliodd ei hoes yn chwalu rhwystrau ar gyfer cenedlaethau'r dyfodol.

✨As we mark Women’s History Month and celebrate International Women’s Day today, we’re shining a spotlight on Lady Eleanor Shelley Rolls. A woman who spent her life breaking barriers for future generations.
----------------
Yn un o’r aelod a sefydlodd Cymdeithas Peirianneg y Menywod, roedd hi'n hyrwyddo peirianwyr benywaidd ar ôl y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf ac yn ymladd yn erbyn y cyfyngiadau a osodwyd ar fenywod sy'n gweithio. O gyd-sefydlu menywod yn rheoli cwmnïau peirianneg i wthio dros hawliau a chyfleoedd ehangach, gyrrodd Eleanor gynnydd pan oedd ei angen fwyaf.

Ar Ddiwrnod Rhyngwladol y Menywod, rydym yn dathlu menywod sy'n gwrthod derbyn cyfyngiadau, yn union fel Eleanor.

Edrychwn ymlaen at rannu ei stori yn Amgueddfa’r Neuadd Sirol pan fyddwn yn ailagor, lle byddwch yn gallu gwerthfawrogi ei heffaith sylweddol. 🤩

A founding member of the Women’s Engineering Society, she championed women engineers after WWI and fought the limits placed on working women. From co founding women run engineering firms to pushing for wider rights and opportunities, Eleanor drove progress when it was needed most.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate women who refuse to accept limits, just like Eleanor.

We look forward to sharing her story at Shire Hall Museum when we reopen, where you’ll be able to explore her remarkable impact. 🤩

🌟 March is Women’s History Month! 🌟 Throughout the month, we’ll be celebrating the some of the remarkable women whose stories will feature in our upcoming exhibitions at Shire Hall Museum when we reopen in early 2027.

🌟 Mawrth yw Mis Hanes Menywod! 🌟Trwy gydol y mis, byddwn yn dathlu'r rhai o'r menywod rhyfeddol, y bydd eu straeon yn ymddangos yn ein harddangosfeydd sydd i ddod yn Amgueddfa'r Neuadd Sirol, pan fyddwn yn ailagor yn gynnar yn 2027.
